A player in Pokemon GO found an egg back in 2016, but never hatched it. Now, he's asking if he should open it. Fans wonder if the egg is worth more or less to open than an egg obtained yesterday. That's a question that usually wouldn't even be asked, as there's only a slim chance that there are many who still have any eggs they acquired in Pokemon GO in 2016.
Pokemon GO first debuted in 2016, which is when the egg in question was found. It's impossible to tell if the trainer forgot to incubate it or if it was purposeful. Pokemon GO has updated many times since then. At first, leaving the egg was likely an accident, but over time the date on the egg, "2016" became a novelty.
Reddit user Master_Worker798 made the post in r/pokemongo, showcasing the egg he found but had yet to hatch from July 27th, 2016, begging the question: what's inside it? The Pokemon available in 2-kilometer eggs back in 2016 were Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle, Caterpie, Weedle, Pidgey, Rattata, Spearow, Pikachu, Clefairy, Jigglypuff, Zubat, Geodude, and Magikarp. The IV of the Pokemon was already set when the egg was found, so the Pokemon contained in it won't change. Hatching it will reveal what it was the whole time, as well as free up a slot in his inventory.
Magikarp has a chance of appearing from the egg, but here's to hoping they get one of the Generation 1 starters. The 2-kilometer eggs used to contain the possibility to get any of the three original starters, a far cry from the Pokemon players can acquire now. It is funny that Magikarp is the only Pokemon to keep hatching from the 2-kilometer eggs since 2016, but since players need 400 candy to evolve it, there must still be some fans out there who've yet to get their Gyarados.
If a Pokemon pops out, it will be one of the Gen 1 Pokemon that populated the eggs of 2016. It turns out that hanging onto an egg for a long time in Pokemon GO doesn't do anything other than take up a spot in the player's inventory that could have otherwise been filled with a new egg. With how often Pokemon GO updates, it's at least good to know that after the Pokemon ID is assigned when the player receives an egg, the contents don't change.
