A group of brand new opponents is arriving in Pokemon GO thanks to the Pokemon GO Tour: Kanto event. Like the various grunts of Team GO Rocket, the special Challenger trainers will be waiting at various Pokestops for a battle.

While these new challengers function similarly to Team GO Rocket, their interactions with trainers are far more on the friendly side. Pokemon GO players participating in the new event will also have access to event-exclusive timed research tasks that focus on these opponents.

There is a total of eight different challengers that players can face during the Pokemon GO Tour: Kanto event. Which one that will appear at a Pokestop is random, but players don't need to worry about encountering specific challengers.

Players only need to go through four steps when it comes to the Defeat all Challengers Timed Research. This means that there are only twelve tasks that players need to complete before they run out of time. Unlike many of the other parts of the Pokemon GO Tour: Kanto event, players do not need a ticket in order to participate in these tasks or to challenge the new opponents.

The first step of the Defeat all Challengers Timed Research tasks will reward players with five Super Potions, 20 Eevee candies, and five Revives upon completion. These tasks are:

  • Catch 20 Pokemon - 500 Stardust
  • Power up Pokemon three times - 15 Great Balls
  • Battle two GO Tour Challengers - Eevee encounter

Step two of these tasks give players three Max Potions, a Sinnoh Stone, and three Max Revives. The tasks that need to first be completed however are:

  • Evolve three Pokemon - 500 XP
  • Power up Pokemon three times - 500 Stardust
  • Battle three GO Tour Challengers - 500 XP

Up next is the third step, which will give players 1,000 XP, 20 Lapras candies, and 1,000 Stardust after completing the trio of tasks. These tasks are:

  • Battle in a raid - 1,000 XP
  • Win a raid - Lapras encounter
  • Defeat three GO Tour Challengers - Star Piece

The final step is the most difficult to complete with plenty of good rewards also being available through it. Players that complete the final step will earn a Fast TM, a Lucky Egg, and a Charge TM. Players must first complete:

  • Power up Pokemon five times - Snorlax encounter
  • Defeat three GO Tour Challengers with your buddy - 20 Snorlax candies
  • Defeat five GO Tour Challengers - One Raid Pass

Players will only have from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm in their local times to complete these tasks on February 20, 2021. Extra time will not be given to players who have purchased tickets giving all players a fair chance with these timed research tasks.
