The Season of Alola has arrived in Pokemon GO and things are pretty exciting right from day one. The new season brought a slew of new tasks, spawns, Egg hatches, and events for trainers to start exploring. Along with all of those activities also came a Battle Raid rotation and the arrival of a brand-new Legendary for players to face off against and catch.

New Legendary creatures don’t arrive in Pokemon GO every day, so this is a pretty exciting occasion for most players. It's unclear at this point what effect Tapu Koko might have on the meta game, but it seems like it will definitely be making a splash one way or another. Whether trainers are focusing on PvE, PvP, or just collecting in pursuit of a complete Pokedex; grabbing a new Legendary is a challenge that just about everyone is going to be interested in. Completing that goal is going to require some preparation though…

Before heading into the latest Legendary Battle Raid, trainers are going to want to understand what they’re up against and how best to counter the challenge. Tapu Koko is an Electric- and Fairy-type, which makes the counter strategy fairly straightforward. Trainers are going to want to bring their very best Ground-type Pokemon and attacks to the fight to take advantage of Tapu Koko’s weakness.

Best Tapu Koko Counters

  • Landorus (Therian) Mud Shot/Earthquake
  • Excadrill Mud-Slap/Earthquake
  • Garchomp Mud Shot/Earth Power
  • Rhyperior Mud-Slap/Earthquake
  • Groudon Mud Shot/Earthquake
  • Roserade Poison Jab/Sludge Bomb
  • Landorus (Incarnate) Mud Shot/Earth Power
  • Landorus Mud Shot/Earth Power
  • Gengar Lick/Sludge Bomb
  • Krookodile Mud-Slap/Earthquake
  • Rhydon Mud-Slap/Earthquake
  • Golurk Mud-Slap/Earth Power
  • Mamoswine Mud-Slap/Bulldoze

As always, trainers should remember that they don’t need the exact counter roster listed above in order to succeed. What really matters is finding the best Ground-type Pokemon available and getting them ready for the fight. That may require spending some Stardust and TMs (or Elite TMs) beforehand. Once that is taken care of, players should team up with around four or more friends and head into the battle. Tapu Koko is a pretty challenging fight, so heading in with extra allies to help soak some of that damage and increase the party DPS is definitely a wise idea.

That should be just about everything players know about this month’s Research Breakthrough encounter rewards, but we should learn more about other upcoming events during the early days of the Season of Alola. Be sure to check back in the near future for more Pokemon GO strategy guides, news, and updates. Until then, good luck out there, trainers!
