Pokemon GO have been teasing an upcoming legendary Summer event and the inclusion of legendary creatures for some time, and now a Niantic official has seemingly confirmed that fans will indeed be seeing some legendary Pokemon and more come Summer time.

In a new interview with Brazilian newspaper O Globo, Niantic VP of Strategic Partnerships Mathieu de Fayet was asked how the studio plan on keeping players interested in Pokemon GO, to which he replied that some of the team's original plans had to be held back due to the mobile game's popularity. De Fayet then stated that the studio is currently working on various things for Summer, and Niantic's plan included both legendary Pokemon and the long-awaited 1v1 player battle feature.

While no specific details regarding when the upcoming Summer event will happen have emerged, these comments from de Fayet are perhaps the strongest indication that Pokemon GO will finally be receiving some legendary Pokemon following a number of teases over the past few months.

De Fayet's comments on an upcoming 1v1 player battle feature is also particularly interesting as this backs up previous evidence suggesting that a Pokemon GO gym overhaul is on the way very soon. While players have been waiting quite some time for legendary Pokemon and 1v1 player battles, de Fayet's comments – as convincing as it sounds – need to be taken with a grain of salt until Niantic officially confirms these new features for the Summer event.

For now though, Niantic is taking its time in unveiling what players can expect from the upcoming Pokemon GO Summer event. Fans have unveiled evidence to suggest that there have been changes made to the rare creature Unown, and these changes in turn will lead to the unlocking of "unobtainable" Pokemon. Of course, fans will be comforted knowing that it is a matter of when and not if Niantic will add in legendary Pokemon given that the company's CEO, John Hanke, has confirmed these rare creatures will be coming "in the not so distant future".

It remains to be seen whether Niantic will finally add some legendary Pokemon into Pokemon GO when the Summer event finally arrives, but with Summer nearly upon us, fans won't have to wait too long to find out.

Pokemon GO is available for iOS and Android.
