Pokemon GO’s next community day is set for July 8th and will be focused on the water-type starter Squirtle. During a 3-hour period, players will have increased chances of finding Squirtle, along with bonuses to egg hatch distance and lure module duration. And now, developer Niantic has announced that there will be a special, sunglasses-wearing Squirtle variant available during the Community Day as well.

Pokemon GO players hoping to catch Squirtle with Sunglasses will need to complete Field Research Tasks while the Community Day is active. However, this doesn’t guarantee a Sunglasses Squirtle, only a chance to encounter it in the wild.

Like the Ash Hat Pikachu, Sunglasses Squirtle is an homage to the Pokemon anime and the Squirtle Squad that were running amok in town. Presumably, the Sunglasses Squirtle that players can catch will be the leader of the group, whose glasses were a bit angular.

It’s not confirmed but most Pokemon GO players assume that some new Field Research tasks will be added to the mobile game ahead of the Community Day on the 8th. Data mines during a recent update revealed that some Kanto-specific Field Research was added, so perhaps these tasks will coincide with the event.

Unlike past Community Days, this Squirtle-focused one will only last for 3 hours -from 11am to 2pm PT. During that time players will see a few bonuses in addition to the increased Squirtle spawns.

For starters, any Blastoise’s that are evolved during the Pokemon GO Community Day will learn the Hydro Cannon attack, which should prove very useful during Gym Battles and raids. There should also be are increased likelihood of coming across Shiny Squirtles, but that is more hit and miss.

Outside of Squirtle-related bonuses, eggs will require half as much walking to hatch and lure modules will last for 3 hours instead of 30 minutes. Presumably, Niantic wants players out and about during the entire Community Day and so they have given them even more incentives to do so.

Once it becomes clear how exactly to increase one’s chances at a Sunglasses Squirtle we will be sure to provide it. As of now, though, it’s just one more incentive to be ready next Sunday.

Pokemon GO is available now for iOS and Android.
