Right now, Pokemon GO players are either taking full advantage of what time they have left of the Luminous Legend X event or preparing themselves for next week's Luminous Legends Y event, which will add Pokemon Y's Yveltal to the game. Speaking of events, one fan on Reddit has come up with their own idea for one and it would involve an iconic criminal group from the original anime series. No, not Team Rocket, but the Squirtle Squad.

As a reminder, the Squirtle Squad was a group of renegade Squirtle who wreaked havoc, causing all sorts of trouble like petty theft and graffiti. With their signature shades, they remain one of the most recognizable elements of the original series, with their leader joining Ash's team. The squad also redeemed itself and became a group of firefighters instead. Their leader would rejoin the group during Ash's Johto journey, although it did occasionally return to help Ash for certain battles.

The squad has actually already been referenced in Pokemon GO. In 2018, one of the Community Day events allowed players to capture a Squirtle wearing shades, which it would keep even after evolving into a Wartortle and Blastoise. However, Reddit user rjbelz would like to see the Squirtle Squad itself appear and as battle opponents.

Their idea is nothing too complex, as it would involve making the squad random wild encounters. Should a player battle them and win, they'd be able to retrieve items that the squad has stolen, like candies and Poke Balls, just like what they did in the anime. Reddit user rjbelz suggests that they could either be a permanent fixture or appear as part of a temporary event so as to avoid it becoming overdone.

Niantic isn't above incorporating aspects from the anime into Pokemon GO. Aside from the aforementioned Squirtle Squad reference, there have been Pikachu sporting different versions of Ash's hat and Team Rocket's own Jessie and James have regularly popped up for players to challenge.

The responses on Reddit seem to be be mostly positive. One other user adds that they wish Niantic went even further with the anime influences, citing a number of unique Pokemon to have appeared throughout the series. Some examples include the pink Butterfree from Bye Bye Butterfree (aka the episode where Ash released his Butterfree aka one of the saddest episodes in the whole series) and Jigglypuff with the marker, one of the series' longest running gags.

At the very least, since the original Squirtle with shades was only available for a limited time, perhaps Niantic could just reintroduce it to the game. Maybe it could even give Squirtle the sharper shades instead of the round ones, as those were the shades Ash's Squirtle wore.
