Now that the legendary Steel-type Pokemon Registeel is available as a raid boss in Pokemon GO, many players may be wondering how to take down this powerful member of the legendary golem trio. As a Gen 3 tier 5 legendary, many fans will want to add to their collection since Regice has served as a raid boss and Regirock is likely next.

First off, Pokemon GO fans should know that Registeel has a total of 30,596 CP with an interesting moveset but several viable counters. Its max capture CP is 1292 (without a weather boost, 100% IV, at level 20) and 1615 (with a snow boost, 100% IV, at level 25). Trainers seeking a challenge could attempt a 3-person win, but having around 6 players is recommended.

Registeel knows the following moves:

  • Metal Claw (quick Steel-type move)
  • Rock Smash (quick Fighting-type move)
  • Flash Cannon (charged, 1 bar Steel-type move)
  • Focus Blast (charged, 1 bar Fighting-type move)
  • Hyper Beam (charged, 1 bar Normal-type move)

While Hyper Beam presents a real challenge, it's not hard to counter Registeel, as the Steel-type legendary is weak against Fire, Ground, and Fighting-type Pokemon. In addition to the numerous weakness, its lackluster moveset means it can't do tons of damage to its counters.

It's also worth mentioning that utilizing a Sunny weather effect is beneficial for Registeel's Fire-type counters or Cloudy weather for its Fighting-type counters. As previously stated, players should avoid an encounter with this legendary Pokemon in Snowy weather, though the CP change is still less than Regice.

The best counters (and corresponding move sets) against Registeel are as follows:

  • Moltres (Fire Spin/Overheat)
  • Charizard (Fire Spin/Blast Burn)
  • Machamp (Counter/Dynamic Punch)
  • Flareon (Fire Spin/Overheat)
  • Hariyama (Counter/Dynamic Punch)

When facing Registeel, it would be a good time for trainers to pull their Blast Burn Charizard out of storage or utilize their Moltres earned from Special Research quests. If players have access to neither, then Flareon is a good substitution. In the Fighting-type corner, Machamp and Hariyama are the way to go, as long as the Pokemon knows the aforementioned move set.

This guide should help players add this latest Legendary golem to their collection, but it's also worth mentioning that Niantic has also added Alolan Pikachu, Magmar, Porygon, and more to the Raid roster. With these additions, there's plenty of reasons to get out and take on a Raid battle. Have fun out there, trainers!
