Although it is a longtime staple of completion in the mainline franchise, completing the Pokedex in Pokemon GO is one of the most challenging feats in the mobile AR game. In addition to limited-time Legendaries and a frequent release of new creatures, there are also very hard to acquire regional exclusives in the game.

Regional exclusives are Pokemon that are meant to only be captured in certain areas of the globe. Now that trading has been added and there have been a few events that took regionals outside of their natural habitat, completing the Pokedex has become more realistic for many players, but is still a big challenge.

As each generation is released, there are new batches of regionals to keep track of. The most recent Gen 4 additions are all in place and players can use this visual guide to find out where each exclusive Pokemon calls home.

Although it seems simple at first glance, there have been lots of exceptions to these placements thanks to Pokemon GO's special events. Sometimes these events allow regionals to spawn somewhere else, become a raid boss somewhere else, or appear in eggs anywhere in the world. Luckily, the community has also documented all of the exceptions that have occurred so far.

Players who have taken advantage of all of those exceptions and are trading aggressively may be able to complete most of the current Pokedex without any crazy travel plans. At the very least, completion of Gen 1 is very realistic thanks to the egg event that occurred a few months ago.

Niantic is always working on new events, so keep an eye out for upcoming exceptions in the coming months as more special promotions are revealed. Hopefully we'll be in for another summer of events that brings a few more regional exclusives to players who are unable to travel.

Be sure to check back for more updates, news, and guides in the coming weeks. Until then, good luck out there, trainers!

Pokemon GO is currently available in select regions on Android and iOS devices.
