The Pokemon fan community The Silph Road has analyzed the Pokemon GO egg hatching system and unlocked some of the secrets behind the rarity tier system. The Silph Road's latest study, "A Window into Egg Transparency," had members of its community track their egg hatches in order to establish what the game's rarity tiers actually mean.

Pokemon GO updated its egg hatching system back in April of this year, allowing players to see what Pokemon were likely to hatch from the eggs they had in their inventory. This feature offered a list of potential Pokemon as well as their rarity level, but left it unclear as to what exactly rarity meant regarding the chance a particular Pokemon would hatch.

Silph Road's examination revealed that the rarity system is quite complex, and the individual rarity of Pokemon gives them only a rough range rather than an exact hatch rate. In its study, The Silph Road notes that "even when Pokemon appear in the same rarity tier, there is no guarantee that they will hatch at the same rate." The Pokemon community is confident this is true of at least the most common tier, but needs more data to confirm this for other tiers.

On top of this, its findings point out that species of Pokemon can change rarity tiers when others are added or removed from the egg pool. The tiers, in general, represent a range of hatch probabilities, and the higher up a Pokemon is on the rarity tier list, the lower the chances are for that Pokemon to hatch.

What this all means is that the egg transparency update that Pokemon GO added is more about giving players an idea of what Pokemon may hatch rather than giving players exact odds on what the egg could be. Therefore, it is an upgrade on the previous mystery associated with eggs, but exact hatch rates remain unclear.

This is an impressive study by The Silph Road and the Pokemon GO egg rarity system makes much more sense now. That being said, the findings are probably what the majority of fans were expecting. The update is still a massive improvement to the egg hatching system within the game, and players should be pleased that the rough tier system provides a general idea.

That being said, it can be frustrating for Pokemon GO players to realize that even though they are looking for a tier 1 Pokemon to hatch, another tier 1 species might have a significantly higher chance. Then again, the rarity system is a step up and the mystery of egg hatching is often part of its appeal.

Pokemon GO is now available for mobile devices.
