Summer has arrived and Pokemon GO players are making the most of the great weather, and that's not just a figure of speech. According to data analysis from SuperData, activity in Pokemon GO is at its highest since the game's peak during the summer of 2016. Pokemon GO's launch success is likely impossible to revisit, but that the mobile Pokemon game is even approaching those numbers again is a staggering achievement.

Unfortunately, SuperData didn't provide any specific numbers with which to reference its data, but given past reports, there are some assumptions that can be made. For instance, the Guinness Book of World Records, working with SuperData, reported Pokemon GO being downloaded over 130 million times in its June 2016 launch month. It set dozens of records for revenue in those early months, making it an overnight sensation.

But a year later, in mid-2017, many wondered if Pokemon GO had lost some of its thunder. It fell off of the top 10 revenue charts and there were few other ways to judge its activity, at least until Niantic's CEO confirmed the game still had over 65 million active users. The issue wasn't that Pokemon GO was floundering, but that the mobile market was increasingly competitive.

Now in 2018, several recent additions to the game, including trading, a friends list, and Alolan Pokemon, are bringing players (and their money) back in droves. If Pokemon GO capped around 130 million players at launch, then dropped to 60-65 million monthly users in 2017, could it be moving back up toward 100 million active players?

No further conclusions were drawn by SuperData, though it believes that the good weather of summer does positively affect the number of Pokemon GO's active players. With the game's big updates now being behind it, further growth in June compared to these May results seems unlikely. All that means is that Pokemon GO players should make the most of these summer months while they last - crack open a few 7-kilometer eggs and hopefully hatch an Alolan Vulpix.

Whether Pokemon GO players make the most of the sunny summer weather or not, it should be abundantly clear that the mobile game isn't going anywhere for a very long time.

Pokemon GO is available now on mobile devices.
