Pokemon GO’s January Community Day event is just a few weeks away, which means players have the elusive Pokemon Piplup and its evolutions on the brain. The weekend of January 19, 2020 Pokemon GO players will have three hours to catch as many of the Gen 4 Water-type as possible and expand their collection with shiny spawns, evolutions, and hopefully a few more surprises.

The basic idea of Pokemon GO Community Day is pretty simple: Go out and catch a ton of pokemon for three hours, but this time around things are different. For players who need a little more direction than that, we’ve put together a comprehensive guide full of all the intel you need for the big day.

Be sure to keep in mind that this day would be a fantastic time to earn that gold water-type badge if you haven’t already acquired it. The badge isn’t particular hard to obtain for players who have been around since the beginning, but this is a great opportunity for newer players to catch up.

Start and End Times

Northern Hemisphere - 11:00am - 2:00pm

Southern Hemisphere - 3:00pm - 6:00pm

Starting in February 2019, Community Day events now always take place on local time, no matter where you are playing. That changes a bit over the winter months as the time is split between hemispheres rather than time zones. Take note of your locations time above.

Special Move

The exclusive Community Day move for January has not been confirmed yet. Be sure to check back in the coming weeks as more details about the event are released.

Make sure to evolve during the active time window (within an hour of the event ending) if you want to secure it.

Bonuses

Increased Piplup spawns

1/4 Egg Hatch Distance

3-hour Lure Modules

Limited Time Field Research

Recent updates to the game’s code suggest that this Community Day, like last month’s, will temporarily offer special Field Research tasks that put an emphasis on the featured Pokemon. Be sure to claim your rewards and clear out a space for these quests if you want to see them.

Shiny Variant

Niantic usually doesn’t confirm the shiny chance until after the event has started, but keep an eye out for shiny Piplup while hunting. They’ve been a part of every other Community Day event, so we fully expect to see them on Saturday the 3rd.

That’s everything we know at this point! Piplup is a very popular Pokemon and is likely to give trainers a good reason to take a break from catching the best Unova Pokemon in the game so far. Check back for more Pokemon GO updates closer to the event. Until then, good luck out there, trainers!

For now, players may want to keep hunting down the best Unova Pokemon in the game if improving their Battle Raid rosters is their primary goal. Be sure to check back in the near future for more Pokemon GO strategy guides, news, and updates. Until then, good luck out there, trainers!

Pokemon GO is available now in select regions on Android and iOS devices.
