Pokemon GO players just wrapped up the January Community Day and are likely organizing and renaming a giant pile of Piplups, but Niantic is already teasing something new for the mobile AR game. Players already know that there is a Special Weekend Raid event coming up, but a serious of mysterious tweets suggest that's not all that is happening in the near future.

For the last handful of days, Pokemon GO has been tweeting emojis that mimic the phases of the moon. Many players are speculating that this is a hint about an upcoming event that will relate to the Chinese New Year or some new version of the Lunar New Year event.

The tweets include no text at all, so Niantic is definitely making things mysterious. Some datamining earlier this month hinting that more Minccino quests were on the way, so many fans think that data is preparing for an event that will tie in with the Year of the Rat. There is no confirmation from the game's developers yet, but things are definitely pointing in that direction.

It seems like the countdown should end sometime later today (January 21, 2020), so fans shouldn't have to wait much longer to find out what is planned. There will likely be a mini-event and some Special Research to go along with it if predictions and the datamined information ends up being accurate.

For now, players may want to keep hunting down the best Unova Pokemon in the game if improving their Battle Raid rosters is their primary goal. Be sure to check back in the near future for more Pokemon GO strategy guides, news, and updates. Until then, good luck out there, trainers!

Pokemon GO is available now in select regions on Android and iOS devices.
