The Pokemon GO New Year activities are about to wrap up and before long a new series of events and special activities will be live in the mobile AR game. As the Mountains of Power event approaches, fans of Battle Raids may want to take some time to prepare some counter rosters for incoming Raid Bosses.

The Legendary and Mega Raid schedule for January 2022 is a pretty exciting one full of shiny opportunities, meta-relevant bosses, and even a new Mega debut. Mega Aerodactyl is making an appearance early this month and Pokemon GO players are going to need to prepare a counter roster for the new boss for the very first time. That means learning the boss’ weaknesses and figuring our exactly which counters are best positioned for the fight so that no Raid Passes are wasted this month.

Like its regular form (which was a tier 3 Battle Raid boss many times already), Mega Aerodactyl is a dual type pairing. The Pokemon is Rock- and Flying-, which means it has an interesting assortment of weaknesses for trainers to exploit as they plan their counter rosters this month. The biggest weaknesses that players will want to focus on are Water-, Electric-, and Rock-types. A roster made up from top tier Pokemon with those three movesets should be well-positioned to take down Mega Aerodactyl with a team of four or five trainers.

Best Mega Aerodactyl Counters

Zekrom - Charge Beam/Wild Charge

Rampardos - Smack Down/Rock Slide

Kyogre - Waterfall/Surf

Rhyperior - Ground/Rock

Swampert - Water Gun/Hydro Cannon

Dialga - Metal Claw/Iron Head

Magnezone - Spark/Wild Charge

Terrakion - Smack Down/Rock Slide

Trainers can find Mega Aerodactyl in Mega Battle Raids from Friday, January 7, 2022, through Tuesday, February 1, 2022. Be sure to prepare a powerful roster and find some allies before heading into the battle.

As always, it’s helpful for trainers to remember that the Mega Battle Raid can still be won even if they don't have the exact counters listed above. The important thing is to just recognize the boss' weakness and stick to that strategy. In the case of Mega Aerodactyl, that means identifying the best Water-, Electric-, and Rock-type Pokemon available and putting them to good use. It is well worth burning through some Candy and TMs to get those Pokemon powered up and equipped with the recommended move sets, as well. Players who follow those steps and stick to a group of 4+ players should have no problems powering through these battles.

In the coming weeks, we should learn more about what other events will be arriving during the early days of the Season of Heritage. Be sure to check back in the near future for more Pokemon GO strategy guides, news, and updates. Until then, good luck out there, trainers!
