When Pokemon GO first debuted in 2016, players around the globe were amazed by its unique AR mode that allowed players to place Pokemon anywhere in the real world and take pictures of them. The AR mode was one of many features that transformed Pokemon GO from a simple mobile game to one of the most played mobile games in gaming history (over 70,000,000 monthly players). Another feature that makes Pokemon GO stand out from other Pokemon games is the Trainer Level.

A Trainer Level dictates how strong a Pokemon can be, so players who want to compete in the GO League must prioritize leveling their Trainer. While the first 40 Trainer Levels are straightforward, starting from Trainer Level 41, players must complete certain tasks to move on to the next level. Players that want to fast-track their progression do well in preparing for those levels by following a Pokemon GO Level Guide.

Trainer Levels 1 – 15

Trainer Level 15 Pokemon GO

The first 15 Trainer Levels require a total of 100,000 XP, so it shouldn't be too challenging for players to level up fairly quickly by catching Pokemon, evolving them, or spinning Pokestops. Upon reaching Trainer Level 5, players unlock the ability to battle Gyms, which is a decent method of earning additional XP.

At Trainer Level 8, players can fight Team Rocket Grunts. However, players should hold off fighting them, as they can prove challenging if a player doesn't have a strong enough Pokemon team. The chart below breaks down Trainer Levels 1 – 15 with the XP needed, rewards, and unlocks.

Trainer Levels 16 – 30

Trainer Level 30 Pokemon GO

Players can breeze through Trainer Levels 16 – 22, since the XP required to level up is relatively low (435,000 total XP). But once players hit Trainer Level 23 and onward, they'll notice a drastic increase in XP requirements as it slowly increments to 350,000 at Trainer Level 30 (2,000,000 total XP).

At this point, players should add as many Friends as possible to reach Best Friend status with them (it takes 90 Days), as this rewards both players with 100,000 XP for each Best Friend. The chart below breaks down Trainer Levels 16 – 30 with the XP needed, rewards, and unlocks.

Trainer Levels 31 – 40

Trainer Level 40 Pokemon GO

Players will begin to notice a major slowdown in terms of leveling up around this point, since most levels will require over 1,000,000 XP. Trainer Level 40 requires a whopping 5,000,000. That means players must take full advantage of every source of XP that Pokemon GO has to offer. Mass-evolving seems to be the most effective method in leveling up at these stages, especially with a Lucky Egg active.

Players can also complete Special Research tasks like "A Thousand-Year Slumber" or "A Ripple In Time," since they provide a decent amount of XP upon completion. Players will unlock the Wayfarer Program once they hit level 30, which allows them to participate in the creation of PokeStops and Gyms. The chart below breaks down Trainer Levels 31 – 40 with the XP needed, rewards, and unlocks.

Trainer Levels 41 – 50

Trainer Level 50 Pokemon GO

Starting from Trainer Level 41, players need to complete Research Tasks to be able to advance to the next level, in addition to obtaining the required XP. The Research Tasks aren't necessarily difficult (aside from the last few), but they take time to complete.

Trainer Level 41 Research Tasks

  • Power up a Legendary Pokemon 20 Times
  • Win 30 Raids
  • Catch 200 Pokemon in a Single Day
  • Earn 5 Gold Medals

Perhaps the most challenging Research task for Trainer Level 41 is catching 200 Pokemon in one day. The most efficient strategy for completing this task is waiting for a Community Day Event. since the Pokemon spawn rate is generally higher than on a normal day. Additionally, by level 40, players should have several Gold Medals under their belts (even some of the harder ones).

Trainer Level 42 Research Tasks

  • Evolve Eevee into All Eevee-lutions
  • Use Items to Evolve Pokemon 15 Times
  • Make 3 Excellent Throws
  • Use 200 Berries to Help Catch Pokemon

Players will likely complete all the tasks before having enough XP to level up to 42, since they're among the easiest tasks compared to other missions. When it comes to evolving Eevee to Jolteon, Vaporeon, or Flareon, players will need to rely on RNG as there's no way of directly influencing one of these Eevee-lutions (aside from the naming trick, which only works once).

Trainer Level 43 Research Tasks

  • Earn 100,000 Stardust
  • Use 200 Super Effective Charged Attacks
  • Catch 5 Legendary Pokemon
  • Earn 5 Platinum Medals

Earning 5 Platinum Medals may seem daunting, but can be completed by focusing on easy Medals like completing Region Pokedex, having 20 Best Friends, or 400 GO Snapshots photobombs. Players can gain tons of Stardust by catching Pokemon or Hatching Eggs while having a Star Piece activated (double Stardust gain).

Trainer Level 44 Research Tasks

  • Win 30 Trainer Battles in the Great League
  • Win 30 Trainer Battles in the Ultra League
  • Win 30 Trainer Battles in the Master League
  • Battle in the Go Battle League 20 times

Players will now need to harness their Pokemon Trainer battle skills since they'll need to reach the GO Master League, the highest league in the entire game. Players must keep up to date with the current Meta Pokemon teams and which ones have the bests Special Attacks.

Trainer Level 45 Research Tasks

  • Defeat 100 Team Rocket Grunts
  • Purify 100 Shadow Pokemon
  • Defeat a Team Rocket Leader 50 times
  • Earn 10 Platinum Medals

Team Rocket Grunts spawn every couple of hours, so players can theoretically complete the first task in a few days. Rocket Leaders only appear after defeating six Team Rocket Grunts, but Rocket Leaders are tougher than the Grunts, so players must prepare well in advance.

Trainer Level 46 Research Tasks

  • Complete 100 Field Research Tasks
  • Take a Snapshot of a Pokemon 7 Days in a Row
  • Make 50 Excellent Throws
  • Hatch 30 Eggs

The Research tasks for Level 46 are another set of easy tasks players will be able to complete without stressing too much. As for the 50 Excellent Throws, players can farm them with Legendary Pokemon since their Catch Circles are much larger than normal Pokemon.

Trainer Level 47 Research Tasks

  • Win 30 Raids Using a Team of All Unique Pokemon Species
  • Win a Three-star Raid Using Only Pokemon with 1500 CP or Less
  • Power up 3 Pokemon to their max CP
  • Earn 20 Platinum Medals

The best strategy to win Three-star raids with "weak" Pokemon is to team up with other Trainers since there's no limit for them. For the 3rd task, players should power up Pokemon with low CP (Pidgey, Rattata, or similar) as they require less Stardust to reach their maximum CP.

Trainer Level 48 Research Tasks

  • Receive 10 Souvenirs from Your Buddy
  • Earn 300 Hearts with Your Buddy
  • Walk 200km with Your Buddy
  • Walk 25km in a Week 8 Times

Players may find these tasks the hardest since they involve lots of walking, but as long as players enable Adventure Sync, they'll be able to complete them almost effortlessly.

Trainer Level 49 Research Tasks

  • Make 10 Trades with Pokemon Caught at least 300km Apart
  • Obtain 50 Lucky Pokemon in Trades
  • Send 500 Gifts to Friends
  • Earn 35 Platinum Medals

Undoubtedly, obtaining 50 Lucky Pokemon in trades and making 10 trades with Pokemon caught at least 300km apart are among the most challenging tasks to complete. Players can only obtain a Lucky Pokemon by trading with a Best Friend player, and even then, there's only a slight chance of it happening. To complete the first task, players must trade with a player from a different city, state, or even country at least 300km away.

Trainer Level 50 Research Tasks

  • Make 999 Excellent Throws
  • Successfully Catch at least One of the Next 5 Legendary or Mythical Pokemon You Encounter
  • Defeat a Team Go Rocket Leader 3 times using only Pokemon with 2,500 CP or less
  • Achieve Rank 10 in the Go Battle League

Even though these are the final tasks to reach the maximum level in Pokemon GO, they're not too challenging compared to the previous ones. But, the most difficult task out of all of them would be reaching Rank 10 in the GO Battle League.

The chart below breaks down Trainer Levels 41 – 50 with the XP needed and rewards. There are no unlocks at these levels; the player has access to pretty much everything Pokemon GO has to offer.
