Like most online games that support a massive audience and host frequent events and content rotations, Pokemon GO obviously has a system for rolling out new patches and updates without causing much interruption to game play at all. Usually patches can be downloaded from the app store when they are ready and no downtime is experienced by players at all. It sounds like an upcoming change in early June is going to require a bit more of a disturbance than usual though...
According to the Pokemon GO Twitter account, there is going to be seven hours of downtime around the globe on June 1. During that window of time, Pokemon GO will be completely inaccessible to trainers. This is the first time in the game's history this sort of downtime has been planned.
Players can obviously deal with a few hours of being locked out of the mobile AR experience, but there are still a lot of questions. More details may be revealed closer to June 1, but for now Niantic has not offered any details about what the purpose of the downtime is or what changes might be live in the game after it is over.
"Trainers, Pokémon GO will be experiencing global downtime for seven hours on Monday, June 1, 2020. From around 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. PDT, the game will be undergoing server maintenance and will be inaccessible to all Trainers. We apologize for any inconvenience that this might cause."
Hopefully more details are released soon, but for now players will just have to wait and see. A popular theory is that Niantic is going to be making some infrastructure changes to improve the Go Battle League and matchmaking systems. There could also be some work being done to lay the groundwork for further functionality for Remote Raids.
