Without a doubt, Pokemon GO continues to generate huge sums of money, as its active player base is currently high as its been since launch back in 2016. With this being the case, Pokemon GO is certainly Niantic's biggest product, so there may be some fans out there unaware of the company's other mobile augmented reality title, Ingress. As it so happens, Niantic CEO John Hanke has now announced that the latter is set to receive its own animated series on Netflix.

According to Hanke, the project is set to be called Ingress: The Animation with it being produced by the animation studio Crafter, with Yuhei Sakuragi signed on as director and Takeshi Honda working character designer. The Niantic CEO revealed that the show will serve as a means to introduce Ingress Prime to viewers, which happens to be a sequel to the 2012 game for both iOS and Android mobile devices.

When it comes to Ingress: The Animation's plot, the story will follow the characters, Makoto and Sarah, who manage to have developed paranormal abilities from some exotic matter leaking into their world. While working together, the two uncover a company that is abusing this matter to experiment on humans and take it down. Ingress: The Animation will eventually introduce an antagonist named Jack who, interestingly enough, will also debut in the new Ingress Prime game.

For those who know nothing about the game on which the forthcoming Netflix series is based, Ingress involves players moving about their real-life environment to take control of virtual “portals” for the side they choose, whether it be the Enlightened or Resistance. As previously mentioned, Ingress hasn't managed to touch Pokemon GO's prosperous popularity in terms of monthly revenue, but the ARG has held its own with there having been more than 20 million downloads.

Taking all of this into consideration, it will be interesting to see if Ingress receives a surge in popularity once the animated series based on the title debuts. Speaking of which, fans should expect Ingress: The Animation to appear on Netflix sometime later this fall.

Pokemon GO and Ingress are available now for iOS and Android devices.
