In the years since Pokemon GO originally launched a ton of exciting features have been added to make the make more engaging for different types of players and to keep things engaging. From Mega Raids to the Buddy System, to Friendship levels; PoGO is always evolving. The next big feature addition may be right around the corner now that a full test is underway in select regions.

Currently, power up Pokestops are being tested in New Zealand as the system continues to be tweaked. The new system is another opportunity for Niantic to gather additional AR assets and real-world mapping data through Pokemon GO's playerbase in exchange for in-game bonuses.

The way the system works in its current form is pretty simple. Players have the opportunity to scan a Pokestop with their phone to help create its 3D model as long as they are within 40 meters of the location. After scanning, the Pokestop's number of scans increases by one and if a certain milestone is hit then the Pokestop powers up to a certain level and offers additional minor bonuses for those around it.

In the testing, there are currently three tiers to the powered up status that can be applied to Pokestops. The rewards aren't all that dramatic or impactful at the lower levels, but the bonus Premier Ball for Battle Raid encounters at the top level could be a life saver for some players during select important Battle Raids.
