Frillish remains a testament that the Pokemon franchise has a knack for making adorable creatures. One of the new additions among Generation V Pokemon, Frillish is a Water/Ghost Pokemon resembling a floating jellyfish. Players patient enough to train these Pokemon can evolve them into Jellicent, much larger jellyfish-looking creatures.

Thanks to their adorable nature, it makes sense for Frillish to become a staple in Pokemon GO. While their builds don’t necessarily outmatch Legendary and Mythical Pokemon, Frillish can become quite the dependable asset in a Pokemon GO match when built properly.

Offense: Jellyfish Can Sting

Despite its unimposing appearance, Frillish can wreak havoc in fights due to its potential as an attacker. When on the offense, Frillish has a wide variety of moves that can accommodate both common and uncommon Pokemon.

Frillish draws upon its aquatic associations with its go-to offensive combo. Being a Water Type, Bubble is strong against Ground, Rock, and Fire Types. Despite its 12 DPS, it does benefit from Same-Type Attack Bonus (STAB), courtesy of Frillish's Water Typing. Ice Beam is its follow-up charged attack, with strengths against Flying, Ground, Grass, and Dragon Types.

This combo alone covers a lot of ground for Frillish, as its advantages can tackle a lot of common Pokemon Types. However, players do need to be wary that Water, Grass, and Dragon Types will resist Bubble Meanwhile, Ice Beam is resisted by Steel, Fire, Water, and Ice Types. Regardless of these setbacks, the reliability of this combo gives it a high rating.

Frillish follows its pair Typing with another reliable attacking combo. This Pokemon retains Bubble as the Quick Move, boasting a STAB buff as well as the aforementioned strengths. However, this time around, Ominous Wind becomes the charged attack. This move gets a STAB buff, as well as advantages against Ghost and Psychic Types.

Frillish can carry this combo when facing off against uncommon Ghost and Psychic Types. However, Bubble's weaknesses have already been discussed, and Ominous Wind is useless against Normal Types. As such, the combo ranks slightly lower than the above, but is still an excellent choice.

Frillish can explore the potential of a Ghost-Ice Typing combo thanks to this setup. As a Ghost-type move, Hex is naturally strong against Ghost and Psychic Types. Thanks to its STAB bonus, Hex will hit much stronger than ordinary Quick Moves. Paired with Ice Beam, Frillish will also enjoy benefits against Flying, Ground, Grass, and Dragon Types.

Unfortunately, both moves have disadvantages. Ice Beam is resisted by Fire, Ice, Steel, and Water Types. Likewise, Hex is resisted by Dark Types and won't work against Normal Types. While this combo can theoretically boast a lot of firepower, the commonality of Normal Types can pose a threat to its DPS.

This combo replaces Ominous Wind with the more powerful Night Shade. This pairing benefits from the STAB buffs of being Water and Ghost Types. As such, they receive a natural boost to their base Damage. Compared to Ominous Wind, Night Shade boasts more firepower at 60 Damage, making it a better damage dealer — although Night Shade does take longer to charge.

This pairing also shares the mutual strengths and weaknesses of the Bubble/Ominous Wind combo. And once again, with the commonality of Normal-types, having any Ghost-type move can be risky.

Players who want Frillish to stick with its Ghost Typing can resort to this combination. Again, this combo benefits from the STAB buff courtesy of their Ghost Typing. Instead of risking the natural weaknesses of Water Type moves, this build fully embraces the potential of Ghost moves.

Due to this, Frillish will have a very neutral performance against most types except for its strengths against Ghost and Psychic. Likewise, Frillish may face a challenge in the form of Normal Types, given its moveset's uselessness against this typing.

Players who want an alternate take on the Ghost-Ghost Typing for Frillish's offensive moveset might want to try this combo. Compared to Ominous Wind, Night Shade poses a larger threat due to its 60 Damage compared to Ominous Wind's 50.

As such, this moveset works slightly better when facing stronger Pokemon of the Ghost and Psychic types, which tend to be powerful attackers. Unfortunately, the Normal-type issue is present here as well.

Defense: Dual Typing Has Its Perks

Thanks to its moveset, Frillish almost always enjoys same-type attack buffs. From a defensive standpoint, this benefit equips Frillish with a lot of potential firepower to fend off even stronger foes. As such, Frillish might appear frail on the onset, but its defensive capabilities shine when squaring off against stronger foes of rarer Typings.

Aside from its strength from an offensive standpoint, Bubble and Ice Beam work as a great pair on a defensive note. Bubble has a middling base 12 Damage and 14 Energy generation per use. However, Bubble will enjoy a STAB buff.

Likewise, Ice Beam retains its status as a powerhouse Main Move, courtesy of its 50 Energy Cost and 90 Damage. Regardless of its rather middling damage, the quick-charge nature of both attacks can help Frillish deal consistent damage.

Hex and Ice Beam remain an ever-reliable combo for Frillish on the defense. Despite the base 10 Damage of Hex as a Quick Move, it does get an extra punch for its STAB buff. Likewise, its 16 Energy generation makes it a handy way to charge Ice Beam much quicker.

In terms of the Main Move, Ice Beam remains formidable. Thanks to its 50 Energy Cost, it's a quick charged attack to access with just a few Hexes. Thanks to its strengths against Flying, Ground, Grass, and Dragon, Ice Beam is a force to be reckoned with on a defensive level.

Players who want to tap into Frillish's STAB buffs from a defensive standpoint might want to try Bubble and Ominous Wind. Bubble generates 14 Energy, much lower than Hex's 16. However, it does boast a higher base 12 Damage. With its strengths against Fire, Ground, and Rock Types, Bubble can tackle more common threats compared to Hex.

Meanwhile, Ominous Wind is much easier to access as a Main Move due to its 33 Energy cost. Sadly, this accessibility does come with a debuff, given it only has base 50 Damage in PVE and base 45 in PVP. Regardless, Ominous Wind's strength against Ghost and Psychic Types make it a formidable attack. Unfortunately, its weakness against Dark Types and uselessness against Normal Types are disadvantages that players need to consider.

Players who want to capitalize on Frillish's Ghost Type side might appreciate Hex and Ominous Wind. Unlike other combos, the quick 16 Energy generation of Hex and the 33 Energy cost of Ominous Wind give players access to swifter attacks. Combined with Frillish's STAB for Ghost Types, this one-two punch combo can work wonders especially against Ghost and Psychic Types.

Of course, players do need to consider a disadvantage when it comes to fighting against Dark Types, as well as the immunities of Normal Types against Ghost Types. While Ghost and Psychic Types will take a beating against this combo, Frillish will likely have middling performance against most other Types.

An alternate take on Frillish's Ghost Type STAB buffs comes from Hex and Night Shade. As a pure Ghost build, Frillish will have the same strengths and weaknesses that other Ghost moves provide.

This combo shines due to the powerful nature of Night Shade. In contrast to the base 50 Damage of Ominous Wind, Night Shade boasts consistent base 60 Damage on both PVE and PVP setups. Granted, it costs 50 Energy to use, but the added "oomph" on overall damage numbers may be worth the extra Hex to fully charge Night Shade.

Players who want to maximize Frillish's STAB buffs can try Bubble and Night Shade. Similar to Hex-Night Shade, this combo charges Night Shade as fast as possible with a fast-paced Quick Attack, in this case, Bubble.

Unlike Hex which generates 16 Energy, Bubble only boasts 14 Energy generation. However, Bubble does pack more punch for its base 12 Damage in PVE. Its only weakness in this regard is its base 7 Damage for PVP, as well Water's resistances discussed above.
