As a new year begins, Pokemon GO's winter event comes to a close, marking the end of numerous bonuses and the disappearance of several seasonal Pokemon. However, Niantic is keeping the holiday's trend of increased rewards alive with the launch of the first Hatchathon event of 2019.

Pokemon GO players that participate in the Hatchathon will receive double Hatch Candy and double Hatch Stardust for every egg they hatch before 4pm EST on January 15. Additionally, trainers will be "more likely" to receive 5 KM and 10 KM eggs from PokeStops and gyms.

While the rate increase for egg acquisition has not been specified, a vocal portion of the community is indicating that more 5 KM eggs is not what they need. Some players are suggesting further that the Pokemon that can obtained from these common eggs are less than stellar to begin with. Previous Hatchathon events have addressed these types of concerns by introducing shiny Pokemon for players to acquire. However, nothing new has been confirmed for the current event at this time.

Pokemon GO Easter event number eggs hatched

The sentiment that hatching eggs rewards lackluster Pokemon is currently a common point of discussion, and it does not only apply to 5 KM eggs. With Pokemon GO's holiday event, players were encouraged to hatch 7 KM eggs in order to obtain new baby Pokemon, and an exceedingly low hatch rate has left trainers feeling burned.

Some of these players used many of their incubators unsuccessfully attempting to acquire new pocket monsters from 7 KM eggs, and some are suggesting that the timing of the Hatchathon, an event that offers bonuses for using more incubators is unfortunate. That said, a portion of the player base will certainly be happy to enjoy the increased rewards the Hatchathon brings. For those that are not interested, the game's new field research tasks may offer enough to keep them occupied.

Pokemon GO is available now in select regions on Android and iOS devices.
