There's a lot to be said about the cultural swell that is Pokemon GO, like how it brings people together, gets folks out of the house, and encourages trading and communication. With Community Day arriving in one month, Niantic has decided to bring the actual community into its decision making process in a big way.

This Pokemon GO event is well scheduled before Community Day begins, and it involves the entire community. Players will have to complete a task in order to place their vote for one of four Pokemon: Vulpix, Machop, Rhyhorn, or Dratini. Whichever Pokemon receives the most votes on February 1, which is the only day players have to complete the tasks and place their official votes, will be released into the game on Community Day proper, though the results will be announced on February 3. If Vulpix or Rhyhorn are selected, their shiny versions will also become available in-game.

The tasks necessary to place a vote will be offered from local PokeStops on the day of voting, and Niantic has assured there will be an even distribution of them. It is currently unknown if this means only some of these tasks will appear to players at a time, though this would seem antithetical to the idea of players voting for the Pokemon they actually want. It would not be too different from Niantic restricting certain Pokemon to certain regions, but it would certainly be disappointing to not be able to vote for the desired Pokemon simply because that quest was not available nearby.

Features like the regional restrictions on catching certain Pokemon in certa area are certain to rankle certain fans of Pokemon GO, and this feature, for all its good intentions, may similarly irritate fans who do not wind up having their choice join the game on this coming Community Day. It's easy to forget now, but just a couple of years ago there were many complaints about Pokemon GO, and each new feature or announcement still deserves careful scrutiny.

Of course, several of those complaints are well in the past today, and the continued and expansive Community involvement is to be admired. As evidenced by its staggering revenue, Pokemon GO has established itself as a phenomenon by this point, and one can only hope this Community event is the first of many choices given to players about the game they play.
