A new Pokemon GO global event has players all around the world working together to unlock special rewards, but the grind to the highest tier is looking a little unrealistic. After the first full day of the event, players still have a long way to go to achieve the main goal.

Trainers unlock the highest reward level if the Pokemon GO community is able to catch three billion Pokemon in just seven days. The event began on Sunday afternoon and isn't off to the fastest start. The first update from Niantic shows players closing in on the lowest tier of rewards, but still a long way from earning those Farfetch'd rewards.

The developer released the Global Catch Challenge standings in a short video on Twitter...

This means that for the rest of the event the community would need to average 450 million catches per day to hit the three billion milestone in time. Things may seem a bit dire, but there is a silver lining here...

Once players reach the first tier of rewards, which should happen tomorrow, there will be an increase in Pokemon spawns around the world and players will begin earning double XP. The double XP should offer the exact motivation that some players need to get out and start participating in the event. If the increased spawns include any exciting Pokemon, then that may help boost the number of interested players, as well.

The timing of the even still seems a bit strange, considering that the Thanksgiving holiday may actually decrease login time for many users at the end of the week. We'll keep an eye on the challenge progress over the rest of the event and see how things play out. Be sure to check back for updates.

Good luck out there, trainers!
