An upcoming Pokemon GO update will allow players to take "family photos" of their Pokemon. The feature will be available thanks to Apple's iOS 11 which will be available later this year.

Pokemon GO will be affected by the introduction of ARKit in several big ways, including making it look as though Pokemon are really part of the world. As part of this upgrade, players will also be able to take photos of multiple Pokemon in a location, instead of just snapping shots of wild Pokemon that spawn in a particular area.

Developer Niantic has explained that the "family photo" feature allows players to not only easily switch Pokemon in and out of the frame but to position them too. This ensures that players will be able to get the most aesthetically pleasing snaps possible before they go about sharing them on social media. In the example photo provided by Niantic at the top of this post, Growlithe, Pikachu, Chikorita and Charizard are enough to make anyone say "squad goals" but no doubt, players will come up with plenty of other share-worthy combinations.

Pokemon GO shadowbans temporary

With iOS 11 not set to launch until fall, alongside brand new iPhones, it doesn't seem as though the family photo feature will be available in time for the Pokemon GO legendary event. That update, which has been teased for a release this summer by Niantic, would add hard-to-get Pokemon to the game and fans would surely love to snaps photos of their collection of legendaries out and about.

It's also unclear whether or not the feature will be available in the Android version of the game. Niantic has made good use of Apple technology when it comes to its hit mobile game, having also released Pokemon GO on the Apple Watch. But on Android, Pokemon GO is more popular than Tinder and players on the Google-maintained mobile platform would feel incredibly left out if they were unable to take impressive photos with their Pokemon squad.

Having been mentioned at Apple's iOS 11 event, Niantic has clearly spent some time getting to grips with iOS 11 and the ARKit technology. However, that isn't to say that it hasn't been able to figure out a workaround to get family photos on Android too. No official announcements have been made on that front, but with Pokemon GO having been downloaded 750 million times, Niantic could be disappointing a lot of Android players by making a platform exclusive feature.
