Niantic promised special rewards for Pokemon GO players if enough members of the community participated in Earth Day cleanup events, and now it has delivered. Starting now and until April 30, Pokemon GO players will enjoy 3x stardust when catching ground-, water-, and grass-type Pokemon, in addition to other bonuses not formally announced by Niantic.

Besides the 3x stardust reward announced by Niantic, other rewards have been noted by the community. Not only are players earning triple the amount of stardust when they catch ground-, water-, and grass-types, but those types of Pokemon are also much more common than usual.

One Pokemon that will be a lot easier to find from now until April 30 is the third generation water-type Wailmer. As it turns out, Niantic has added a shiny Wailmer to the game as well, which stands as yet another Earth Day reward for the Pokemon GO community.

Finding a shiny Wailmer won't be an easy task, but players will find it much easier during the Earth Day celebration. From our own testing, it seems like Wailmer is by far one of the most common Pokemon right now, which should help players find a shiny one, plus make it much easier to build up the 400 candy required to evolve it into Wailord.

Besides the immediate benefit of having a shiny Wailmer, there are other reasons why players may want to use this opportunity to catch as many Wailmer as possible. Assuming future Special Research quests are similar to the first one, it's likely that players may have to evolve a Wailmer into a Wailord in order to complete them. Considering this, it may be wise to hoard some Wailmer candy just in case.

The Earth Day rewards continue Niantic's streak of special events in Pokemon GO. The past few months have seen a number of events designed to keep Pokemon GO fans engaged with the game, including various Community Days as well as special events like the recent Kanto region celebration. If Niantic keeps the momentum going, it looks like 2018 may be the most content-heavy year for Pokemon GO to date.
