Pokemon GO's Mew quest is live now, but it features some rather significant challenges for fans of the game. One of the biggest obstacles to players completing the Special Research quest and catching Mew is catching a Ditto in the wild, as it's a task based almost entirely on luck. However, if Pokemon GO players know which Pokemon can be Ditto, finding the elusive creature is a somewhat easier task.

With the introduction of the third generation Pokemon, the Pokemon that can be Ditto have been changed, but we have an updated list of creatures that players should focus on.

Here are all the Pokemon that can be Ditto in Pokemon GO:

  • Gastly
  • Gulpin
  • Hoothoot
  • Pidgey
  • Rattata
  • Sentret
  • Taillow
  • Whismur
  • Yanma
  • Zigzagzoon
  • Zubat

It's clear by the list that the Pokemon that can be Ditto are all some of the weakest and most common Pokemon in the game. Considering this, players should expect to spend hundreds of balls in their search for the little shape-shifting monster (unless they just get lucky of course).

Finding Ditto in Pokemon GO is more of an endurance test than anything else. And while some players may already have collected a few of them by now, some veteran players may not have even realized that the Pokemon that can be Ditto have changed. In fact, there are some Pokemon that no longer transform into Ditto at all, like Magikarp, for instance.

Speaking of Magikarp, the water-type Pokemon is part of another big challenge in the Special Research quest to catch Mew. Players will have to amass a whopping 400 Magikarp candy to evolve it into a Gyarados as part of step 6 of the quest, but luckily there are ways to make Magikarp evolve fast. Or at least, faster than usual.

Once players have evolved a Magikarp into Gyarados and have caught a Ditto, they will have conquered two of the biggest challenges blocking their path to Mew. It's just a matter of completing the remaining objectives before players can catch Pokemon GO's very first mythical Pokemon and add Mew to their Pokedex.

Pokemon GO is available now for iOS and Android devices.
