There are many different Pokemon that players can encounter in the wild while playing Pokemon GO. Even without considering Legendary Pokemon that are often limited to raids, there are still some more ordinary Pokemon that require a little more effort to find.

One mysterious non-Legendary Pokemon is Ditto, a Pokemon that some players found strangely absent back when Pokemon GO was first released. It has since been present in the game for quite some time now, but finding it still is on the tricky side.

Updated on March 15, 2023: Ditto is one of the more elusive Pokemon to catch in Pokemon GO, and although it's been years since the Pokemon came to the mobile game, the method to catch it is still the same. However, the Pokemon that Ditto can appear as (disguises) has slightly changed, so we've updated our guide on how to get Ditto with the current disguise roster. Links have also been improved, and we've added some new images.

How to Get Ditto in Pokemon GO

The main gimmick of Ditto is that it has the ability to transform into any Pokemon it encounters. To translate this into Pokemon GO, Ditto can take the appearance of a number of different Pokemon in the overworld. Players won't know they've found a Ditto until they've caught one, where it will reveal its true form.

While Ditto is more useful in the mainline games due to Pokemon GO not having a Pokemon breeding mechanic, some players may still want to catch one. This is due to Ditto being one of the Pokemon needed to complete the Kanto section of the Pokedex, and catching a Ditto needed to get Mew. While the reason for this may not be obvious to some who haven't gotten far enough into Mew's Special Research Tasks, catching Ditto is one of the later tasks in the series of tasks.

Ditto Disguises in Pokemon GO

Ditto, Pokemon GO

Here are the Pokemon that Ditto is known to disguise itself as.

  • Ekans
  • Gastly
  • Natu
  • Surskit
  • Finneon
  • Lillipup
  • Dwebble

In this case, players should catch any of these Pokemon if they appear on the overworld for them. There is no guarantee that these Pokemon will turn out to be Ditto, but these are the ones to watch for.

Like any other Pokemon, Ditto is affected by Lures placed on PokeStops and Incense used by players. Still, players won't know if they've found a Ditto until they've caught one, so some unlucky players may have a catching marathon in their future.

Pokemon GO is available on Android and iOS.
