As if Niantic wasn't busy enough with Pokemon GO and the recently announced Harry Potter mobile AR game, the company is also planning to launch a new version of the game that put it on the map with Ingress Prime.

For those who aren't familiar, Ingress is a mobile AR game that launched in 2012 and its systems are kind of the backbone of what became Pokemon GO. The game's theme is high-tech hacking and players associate themselves with a colored team and collect resources and attempt to take control of locations, in a very similar way that they would in Pokemon GO.

Ingress Prime seems to be built around the same idea, but adds in a much-needed user interface update, new sound design, and a series of new features.

The first teaser is mostly cinematic in nature, and doesn't dive into the updates and new features, but it's still a very cool introduction to the world of Ingress for newer players...

It will be very interesting to see if this update brings new players into the fold. Existing Ingress players will be able to retain all of their experience and leveling, but it sounds like the world map will be reset at the launch of Prime. It's likely that the team will do as much as possible to make the new experience extremely friendly to new users.

It seems like players who are newly interested in this type of game are more likely to latch onto an existing strong IP like Pokemon or Harry Potter, but Niantic clearly isn't ready to give up on the world of Ingress just yet. Check back for updates on new details and dates.

Ingress Prime launches in 2018 for mobile devices.
