The Pokemon GO Color Cup is here - the latest in a series of challenge cups with interesting rule restrictions. While these rules might be a little difficult to work around, they make for some interesting combinations and can force players out of their comfort zone. Here are a few Pokemon that are best suited for the Color Cup in Pokemon GO.

Pokemon GO: Color Cup Rulespokemon go great ultra league training

The rules of the Color Cup are fairly simple but provide a lot of restrictions:

  • Only Pokemon that are Fire, Grass, Water, or Electric-type can be entered.
  • CP cap of 1500.

While the rules are restrictive, they work in the players' favor on a number of accounts. The first is that the low CP limit means trainers can spend less Stardust and Candy powering up potential Pokemon picks. The other is that the type chart shrinks, and the strengths and weaknesses are easier to predict.

Best Pokemon for the Color Cup

PoGORisingHeroes

It is difficult to recommend specific team combinations for the Color Cup, as every trainer has access to different Pokemon. Instead, the trainer should focus on building a team from Pokemon on this list that has a wide range of type resistances and access to moves of a variety of types. Keep in mind that multiple of the same Pokemon cannot be used.

Tropius is a Grass/Flying-type, which makes it effective against Grass - the same type that qualifies it for entry. The only major worries are Fire-type moves, but Fire-type Pokemon aren't particularly dominating the meta this season. Tropius makes a good, bulky spammer that can take a lot of hits and give a lot of hits.

Abomasnow is a beast. Despite having access to only relatively low base power moves, it can give a lot of them. This is great for applying shield pressure - forcing the opponent to use up their shields so they're completely vulnerable to later Charged Attacks. Its moves are also effective against Grass, a type that is dominating this cup.

Mantine has a significant advantage in its Water/Flying-type - and one significant weakness. It's resistant to Water and Fire, neutral to Grass, but doubly weak to Electric attacks. While only a few Electric-types are significant meta favorites, it's something to watch out for and to compensate for with other team members.

Toxapex is a beast in the current meta anyway, so a lot of competitive players will have access to a decently powered one. In this cup, it benefits from high-damage Poison moves, with Water for coverage against Fire-types. Both Poison Jab and Sludge Wave are some of the highest Fast and Charged attacks in the game.

Shadow Zapdos is the major Electric-type player of this cup. It benefits from a lack of relevant weaknesses and is a spammy, dynamic Pokemon that applies a lot of shield pressure. The primary issue is that Shadow Zapdos takes a lot of Stardust and Candy to upgrade, so it may not be worth investing in just for this cup. It can be a useful investment for dedicated players, though.

While most Legendaries are too high-powered for this cup, Victini is in the sweet spot of having potentially low CP when caught. Victini will be especially effective against Abomasnow, Galvantula, Luxray, and Zapdos, strong contenders in the meta. It also has access to Quick Attack, which has the benefit of doing neutral damage against all types.
