Pokemon GO's most recent update has brought upon Mega Evolution and Mega Evolved Pokemon. Players can catch Mega Evolved Pokemon via the special Mega Evolution raids that are currently active. These raids are currently starring the Mega Evolutions for the three Kanto starters among a few others.

One Pokemon that is a special case is Charizard, as it has two different possible Mega Evolutions that appear in Pokemon GO. These Mega Evolutions are Mega Charizard X and Mega Charizard Y.

Mega Charizard X and Mega Charizard Y aren't different aesthetically. These Pokemon actually have different typing, causing players to consider different counters when dealing with each of them.

Pokemon Mega Charizard Y

Like a normal Charizard, Mega Charizard Y is a dual fire and flying-type Pokemon. This means that it is weak to rock, water, and electric-type moves while also resisting ground, fighting, bug, steel, fire, grass, and fairy-type moves.

While all three of its weaknesses can be taken advantage of, rock is the best one to use, thanks to it being a 4x weakness rather than a 2x weakness. With this in mind, the best rock-type Pokemon using rock-type moves are:

  • Rhyperior - Smack Down and Rock Wrecker
  • Rampardos - Smack Down and Rock Slide
  • Tyrantar - Smack Down and Stone Edge
  • Terrakion - Smack Down and Rock Slide
  • Gigalith - Smack Down and Rock Slide
  • Omastar - Rock Throw and Rock Slide

One non-rock-type Pokemon that is also recommended to bring against Mega Charizard Y is Zekrom. This Legendary Pokemon is a dual electric and dragon-type Pokemon, meaning that it will resist all STAB moves dealt out by Mega Charizard Y during the battle. Its recommended moves to damage Mega Charizard Y are Charge Beam and Wild Charge.

If players don't have many rock-type Pokemon at their disposal, these water Pokemon are also recommended for the fight:

  • Palkia - Dragon Tail and Hydro Pump
  • Kyogre - Waterfall and Surf
  • Swampert - Water Gun and Hydro Cannon
  • Feraligatr - Water Gun and Hydro Cannon
  • Gyarados - Waterfall and Hydro Pump
  • Kingler - Bubble and Crabhammer

If these still aren't easily available options for players, these electric-type Pokemon, excluding the already mentioned Zekrom, are also recommended:

  • Electivire - Thunder Shock
  • Raikou - Volt Switch and Wild Charge
  • Zapdos - Thunder Shock and Thunderbolt
  • Thundurus (Therian Form) - Thunder Shock and Thunder
  • Alolan Golem - Volt Switch and Wild Charge
  • Luxray - Spark and Wild Charge

As Mega Charizard Y is a difficult raid, it is recommended for players to not challenge it alone. This is a perfect opportunity to invite friends or use remote raid passes.
