Although the game was somewhat of a flash-phenomenon when it first released in the summer of 2016, Pokemon GO still manages to maintain a large dedicated player base today. Over the course of 4 years, players have set out to accomplish some impressive feats. From rare Shiny Pokemon finds to incredibly long periods of Gym control, players have found various ways to enjoy the AR-based mobile game.

Back in November of last year, Pokemon GO introduced a massive GO Beyond update that made many long-awaited changes to the game, such as an unlocked level cap, a new Seasons mechanic, and perhaps most notably, a complete reworking of the game's XP system. Since then, players have gotten creative in their attempts to gain the most possible XP at once, and now, one player has set a new catch XP world record.

In Pokemon GO, players can gain XP in various ways, but catching Pokemon can provide some of the most rewarding results. Over on Reddit, user AirbenderSteven posted a screenshot of a wildly impressive amount of XP gained after capturing a single Swirlix, setting a new world record. After combining 8 different catch bonuses, the Reddit user gained a whopping 73,760 XP in just one catch.

After achieving the standard amount of XP for just capturing the Pokemon, AirbenderSteven received additional bonuses for adding the new Gen 6 Pokemon Swirlix to their Pokedex, making that Pokemon their first catch of the day, catching it on the 7th day of their catch streak, making an Excellent Curveball throw, catching the Swirlix with their first PokeBall thrown, and finally, obtaining the Expert Handler bonus in AR+ mode. By far, the biggest bonus received by the player was catching this Swirlix after capturing Pokemon 7 days in a row, with 48,000 XP awarded for that alone.

AirbenderSteven mentions that the new record was achieved thanks to a Lucky Egg, and other XP boosts also helped the player obtain an 8x XP increase on all bonuses except the one for catching a new Pokemon. One Reddit user also pointed out that gaining this massive amount of XP off of a single catch is enough to take a level 1 player all the way up to level 13 in one go.

Just earlier this week, Pokemon GO kicked off its newest season, the Season of Discovery. The new season brings the Legendary titans Regirock, Regice, and Registeel to Legendary Raids in the game, new Mega Pokemon like Mega Slowbro, and more surprises that have yet to be revealed. And with Pokemon GO Fest 2021 also coming up next month, Pokemon GO players have a lot to look forward to.

Pokemon GO is available on Android and iOS.
