Bouffalant in the Pokemon franchise appears as quite the typical bovine, even in Pokemon GO. Sporting its signature afro and headbutting tendencies, Bouffalant remains quite a notable Pokemon among its Generation V counterparts. While not a Legendary or a Mythical Pokemon in itself, this Normal-Type boasts how adorably mundane daily life in the Pokemon universe can become.

Given their common nature, it makes sense for Bouffalant to become a common Pokemon in Pokemon GO as well. In the ARG, Bouffalant remains a Normal-Type with a penchant for headbutting and bashing moves. However, despite its status as a common Pokemon in the ARG, a player with enough patience can transform Bouffalant into a juggernaut in combat.

Offense: Go All In With Attack

Courtesy of its strong horns, Bouffalant can boast quite a powerful offensive advantage when used properly. Being a Normal Type, Bouffalant can dish out decent damage against almost any Pokemon Type aside from its natural weakness (Fighting), which makes Bouffalant a great Attacker for almost any situation. Here are its best offensive movesets:

This move combination easily becomes Bouffalant’s signature combo, given its 10.9 DPS rating. Being a Quick Move, Zen Headbutt will almost always put a dent in an enemy’s defense, particularly against Fighting and Poison Types. Granted, it’s weak against Steel and Psychic Types and won’t even affect Dark Types. However, in these situations, Zen Headbutt would have already helped Skull Bash get fully charged.

Being a Main Move, Skull Bash boasts a whopping 130 Damage and 50.3 DPS. Thanks to its Normal Typing, Skull Bash doesn’t have any special strengths against other Types, making it a decent all-rounder. It’s weak against Rock and Steel Types, and ineffective against Ghost Types. However, in these situations, the neutral Typing of Zen Headbutt can compensate for Skull Bash’s weak points.

This move combination easily covers more ground in terms of Typing advantages and disadvantages, thanks to its 97-percent DPS rating. Being a Ground Move, Mud Shot boasts strengths against Electric, Fire, Poison, Rock, and Steel Types. Considering that the aforementioned Types tend to appear a lot in the meta, Mud Shot becomes an ever-reliable Quick Move against them. Despite its weaknesses versus Bug and Grass Types, and its inefficiency against Flying Type, Mud Shot is a worthy enough investment for most situations.

Likewise, Skull Bash makes a decent enough pair for Mud Shot given its Typing. Due to Skull Bash’s weakness against Rock and Steel Types, Mud Shot’s strengths against them become a great neutralizer. Given its neutral Typing, Skull Bash remains a decent Main Move against most Pokemon.

This move combination adds a lot more flexibility in terms of Typing, allowing Bouffalant to cover more ground. Zen Headbutt returns as a Quick Move, with its Psychic Typing making it strong against Fighting and Poison Pokemon. Despite its weakness against Psychic and Steel Pokemon, as well as its inefficiency against Dark Pokemon, the rarity of encountering these opponents can make Zen Headbutt remain reliable.

Earthquake replaces trademark Skull Bash as a Main Move in this combo. Now a Ground Type, Earthquake diversifies its capabilities as a charged attack. Thanks to its Typing, Earthquake becomes remarkably strong against Electric, Fire, Poison, Rock, and Steel Types - making it a deadly charged move in the meta. With its weakness against common Bug and Grass Types, as well as its inefficiency against Flying Types, it makes sense that this combo has a 91-percent DPS rating.

This move combination gives Bouffalant another Normal Type option for its Main Attack. Ever-reliable Zen Headbutt is this combo’s Quick Move, as its Psychic Typing boasts great advantages to meta-apparent Fighting and Poison Types. Instead of Skull Bash, players can opt for Stomp as a Main Move. Thanks to its Normal Typing, it retains the Type’s weaknesses against Rock and Steel as well as inefficiency against Ghost Types.

Unfortunately, Stomp does possess only 55 Damage and 38.8 DPS rating. In addition, this combo’s inherent weaknesses against Steel can spell a bad day in the unfortunate circumstance of encountering this Type in a battle. As such, these demerits grant this combo an 88-percent overall rating.

This move combination emphasizes the sheer power of Ground Types, with both its Quick Move and Main Moves possessing this Typing. As such, both Mud Shot and Earthquake boast strengths against Electric, Fire, Poison, Rock, and Steel Types. In terms of damage, Mud Shot boasts a middling 5 Damage and 8.3 DPS, whereas Earthquake boasts a powerful 140 Damage and 38.9 DPS.

Unfortunately, this combo does emphasize the Type’s inherent weakness against common Bug and Grass Types. Not to mention, its inefficiency against Flying can make Bouffalant a bit useless against this Type. In turn, these disadvantages give this combo an 88-percent overall rating.

This move combination tries to compensate for Bouffalant’s overall weaknesses in terms of its other attacks. Zen Headbutt returns as the ever-reliable Quick Move, boasting 12 Damage and 10.9 DPS. Being a Psychic Move, it has strengths against Fighting and Poison, as well as weaknesses against Steel and Psychic. It also carries the Typing’s inefficiency against Dark Types.

However, Megahorn’s entrance as the Main Move tries to balance these weaknesses. At its core, Megahorn boasts 110 Damage and 50 DPS, making it a decent middle ground across all Main Moves. More importantly, Megahorn is strong against Grass, Psychic, and Dark Types - balancing out Zen Headbutt’s weaknesses. Unfortunately, the combo still merits an 87-percent overall rating, as Megahorn has a lot of weaknesses. In place of combating rarer Psychic and Dark Types, Megahorn has weaknesses against Fairy, Fighting, Fire, Flying, Ghost, Poison, and Steel Types.

Defense: Shields Up To Protect

Thanks to its burly nature, Bouffalant can boast quite the protective defense to outlast even the toughest of foes. Given its Normal typing, Bouffalant can fend off most Pokemon Types except for its vulnerability (Fighting). As such, Bouffalant’s defensive potential makes it a decent companion for almost any combat type. Here are its best defensive movesets:

Despite the rather middling rating of this combo from an offensive standpoint, this combo excels well when used on the defense. Zen Headbutt boasts a packing 12 Damage with 10.9 Damage and can generate 10 Energy. From a defender’s standpoint, Zen Headbutt can generate enough Energy quickly to dish out Megahorn, which can be more than enough to hurt most attackers.

At its core, Megahorn costs 100 Energy but deals a massive 110 Damage. Given its strength against common Grass Types and more uncommon Psychic and Dark Types, Megahorn is a decent middle-ground for defensive builds.

Trademark Zen Headbutt and Skull Bash remain a strong moveset even from a defensive standpoint. As expected of Zen Headbutt, its reliable 10 Energy generation per attack make it a quick “recharging” station for Skull Bash. Not to mention, its 10.9 Damage still hurts despite its nature as a Quick Move.

Compared to Megahorn, the more neutral Typing of Skull Bash makes it a devastating Main Move to encounter as an attacker. It may cost 100 Energy, but it packs a devastating 130 Damage. While it’s weak against Rock and Steel Types, their uncommon nature makes Skull Bash an ever-reliable threat against most attackers.

Similar to the Zen Headbutt and Skull Bash combo, the Zen Headbutt and Stomp pairing make a decent defensive moveset for Bouffalant. However, it only boasts a 98-percent rating courtesy of the middling nature of Stomp as a move. Being the ever-reliable recharger, Zen Headbutt’s 10 Energy generation can become a fast way to dish out Stomp quickly. Because Stomp only costs 50 Energy, Bouffalant can release this move extremely often.

Of course, players need to remember that Stomp only deals 55 base damage. Granted, its move duration and damage window happen much faster than Skull Bash. With the right enhancements, Bouffalant can theoretically pull off Stomp more often than Skull Bash. However, players still need to be wary of Normal Typing’s weaknesses against Rock and Steel Types.

Similar to its offensive counterpart, Zen Headbutt and Earthquake provide much-needed flexibility in terms of Typing for Bouffalant’s defense. Thanks to Zen Headbutt’s 10 Energy generation, its 12 base damage per hit can still whittle the opponent’s HP to build up Earthquake’s devastating attack. Its strength against Fighting and Poison Types also becomes useful against common attackers of these categories.

However, perhaps the shining jewel of this combination lies in the Earthquake. Despite its 100 Energy costs, it boasts 140 damage with 38.9 DPS. This number places Earthquake as Bouffalant’s Main Move with the highest damage count. Not to mention, its strength against Steel Types helps compensate Zen Headbutt’s weakness against them. At its core, Earthquake boasts solid defense against Fire, Electric, Poison, and Rock Types as well. Of course, players do need to be warier of its weakness against common Bug and Grass Types, as well as its inefficiency against Flying Types.
