Possessing one of the more unique type combinations, Deerling, and its evolved form Sawsbuck, hold a niche that grants them decent usability for some Pokemon GO teams. Normal-type moves, being some of the most common in the game, don't often end up being the most useful, however, Deerling can be an exception to this trend.

When entering any battle in Pokemon GO, it is important to consider the strengths and weaknesses of one's pocket monster partners, especially in regards to their type. A significant reason for this is the mechanic known as the Same Type Attack Bonus (STAB), as it grants pokemon who use moves that match their type extra offensive power.

Analysis Of Deerling's Fast Attacks

Firstly, it should be mentioned that both of Deerling's possible Fast Attacks are Normal-type, meaning that a STAB will always be present, regardless of the move chosen for one's Fast Attack slot. With that said, Tackle and Take Down seem to vary in function if one compares their respective stats.

It can be argued that Take Down is better due to dealing higher single-hit damage, however, the higher DPS of Tackle should not be ignored. What will truly determine which of these moves is the best will come down to how a trainer wishes to battle alongside their Deerling: those seeking a pokemon that can knock out opponents quickly should select Take Down while those who favor longer battles should select Tackle, as the higher DPS of the latter will result in comparatively more damage in protracted battles.

Analysis Of Deerling's Charged Attacks

Interestingly, along with the Grass-type moves Energy Ball and Seed Bomb, Deerling can learn the Electric-type Wild Charge, which, while seemingly random, can actually be a great boon in battle. One of the most common threats to Deerling is Flying-type foes, as their attacks will be super-effective on the partial Grass-type. Wild Charge is a great way to turn the tables on such adversaries in an unexpected manner, so, if trainers need their Deerling to have some better type-coverage, it is advised to equip Wild Charge to a Charged Attack slot.

Players deciding between Energy Ball and Seed Bomb will have a tougher choice, however, after weighing the pros and cons, most will find that Energy Ball is the best out of the Grass-type Charged Attacks overall thanks to its much higher base Damage stat. Even though Seed Bomb has slightly higher DPS and 3 energy bars (as opposed to Energy Ball's 2 energy bars) the amount of HP Deerling can take away from foes with each Energy Ball is worth the slower charging and attack speed.
