Mega Raids are here! Pokemon GO players around the world can currently work through the new Mega Discovery special research tasks and start participating in Mega Raids with their friends to earn the Mega Energy needed to Mega Evolve some of their own Pokemon.

Not every Pokemon has a Mega Evolution available just yet, but there is a solid list of options for players to use to test out the new feature at this point. In order to start using Mega Evolutions, players are first going to need to save up some Mega Energy. This means it's time to head out and start defeating Mega Raid Bosses. These bosses put up quite a fight, so Pokemon GO players should carefully plan their counter strategy before heading to the Raid Lobby.

Currently, Pokemon GO trainers can battle against Mega Evolutions of the original three starters. For this guide, we'll take a closer look at the best counters for Mega Blastoise in these new Battle Raids. Keep in mind that the best counters will vary from player to player based on their own collection and how many people are entering the lobby together.

In general, high level players are going to want to head into this fighter with at least 3-5 friends. Blastoise is a Water-type, which means that players will have the best bet using Grass- and Electric-types. Here are some of the strongest options currently available...

Best Mega Blastoise Counters

Shadow Raikou - Thunder Shock/Wild Charge

Shadow Magnezone - Spark/Wild Charge

Shadow Zapdos - Thunder Shock/Thunderbolt

Zekrom - Charge Beam/Wild Charge

Shadow Mewtwo - Psycho Cut/Thunderbolt

Mega (or Shadow) Venusaur - Vine Whip/Frenzy Plant

Tangrowth - Vine Whip/Power Whip

This particular list of counters features some that have been very popular for many bosses in recent years, so it is likely that many trainers already have a powerful Raikou or Zapdos or Mewtwo ready to go. That should be quite helpful and save trainers some valuable Stardust and Candy as they are preparing for this fight.

Once trainers manage to defeat Mega Blastoise enough times to earn the amount of Mega Energy needed to Mega Evolve their own, they should take careful note of how long a Mega Evolution lasts, so they can figure out the most beneficial time to cash in that benefit. Mega Evolutions are very powerful, so trainers should make sure they use them wisely to help defeat a powerful enemy.

Now that the Special Research event is live and the new mechanic is in place, the festivities should give trainers a good reason to continue catching the best Unova Pokemon in the game and getting closer to that complete Pokedex. Check back for more Pokemon GO updates closer to the event. Until then, good luck out there, trainers!

Pokemon GO is available now in select regions on Android and iOS devices.
