A new week is here, which means that Pokemon GO players are finished with the Sinnoh celebration and moving on to the Hoenn region. This week offers the opportunity to help fill in that Hoenn Pokedex thanks to increased spawns, special Egg Hatches, and a handful of exciting Hoenn region-inspired temporary Raid Bosses.

The Hoenn Celebration week is particularly exciting because it includes two Legendary Raid Bosses. That means that Pokemon GO trainers are going to get the chance to challenge both Groudon and Kyogre this week. Both creatures are very powerful, so players will likely want to ensure at least a few encounters and add some new Pokemon to their collection.

Both Hoenn Legendaries are very popular in the Pokemon GO metagame and offer challenging raids, but this guide is going to focus on the Kyogre fight. The powerful Water-type Legendary is weak to both Electric- and Grass-type Pokemon, which means that players should have plenty of options when it comes to building a counter roster. There have been some big changes since the last time Kyogre was a Raid Boss, including new evolutions and the release of Mega Evolutions, so trainers should revisit their counter roster to make sure it is up to date with the best options...

Best Kyogre Counters

Venusaur (Mega) -Vine Whip/Frenzy Plant

Zekrom -Charge Beam/Wild Charge

Raikou - Thunder Shock/Wild Charge

Roserade - Razor Leaf/Grass Knot

Sceptile - Fury Cutter/Frenzy Plant

Magnezone - Spark/Wild Charge

Electivire - Thunder Shock/Wild Charge

Zapdos - Thunder Shock/Thunderbolt

Tangrowth - Vine Whip/Solar Beam

Shaymin (Sky) - Zen Headbutt/Grass Knot

Venusaur - Vine Whip/Frenzy Plant

Luxray -Spark/Wild Charge

Torterra - Razor Leaf/Frenzy Plant

Exeggutor (Alola) - Bullet Seed/Solar Beam

Trainers should keep in mind that the list of counters presented represent that very top tier from the current metagame. The Battle Raid is definitely still winable without these specific Pokemon and move sets, but they will offer the best performance when powered up and used in the right combination. Trainers who team up with four or five friends can still take down Kyogre by just using the best Electric- and Grass-type Pokemon that they have at their disposal. Keep in mind that it may be worth burning through some TMs and Rare Candy in order to power up some of those counters and give them the right move sets to make the fight a little easier.

As trainers continue working through these amazing Celebration events and enjoying the new era of the GO Beyond update as they count down to the next season, they may want to keep hunting down the best Unova Pokemon in the game if improving their Battle Raid rosters and completing their Pokedex is their primary goal. Be sure to check back in the near future for more Pokemon GO strategy guides, news, and updates. Until then, good luck out there, trainers!
