In Pokemon GO, most Pokemon evolutions are fairly straightforward. Players simply need to collect a certain amount of that Pokemon's candy to evolve it, though occasionally they will also need an evolution stone or have to fulfill a walking distance requirement. However, Eevee's evolution, like in the main games, is a bit more complex in that it can evolve into multiple Pokemon.

Currently, Eevee in Pokemon GO has five potential evolutions: Espeon, Flareon, Jolteon, Umbreon, or Vaporeon. Each evolution requires 25 Eevee candy, and while each evolution may seem random, there are actually tricks players can use to manipulate which Pokemon Eevee will evolve into.

Since the Celebi Special Research quest has objectives related to evolving Eevee and controlling its evolution, here is a reminder of how to get all of Eevee's evolutions in Pokemon GO.

First Generation

There are three first-generation Eevee evolutions in Pokemon GO in the form of Vaporeon (water-type), Jolteon (electric-type), and Flareon (fire-type). Pokemon GO players can evolve Eevee into each one of these Pokemon by using the "name trick" - by changing Eevee's nickname in the game and then evolving it, it will determine what Pokemon it evolves into.

  • Flareon (Pyro)
  • Jolteon (Sparky)
  • Vaporeon (Rainer)

Players should keep in mind that they should reset their game after changing Eevee's name and that this name trick only works the first time they use it. Afterwards, the only way to get Flareon, Jolteon, or Vaporeon in Pokemon GO is luck of the draw. And as more Eevee evolutions are added to the game, getting these specific creatures will become even more difficult, so Pokemon GO players may want to start evolving all of their Eevees now if they want more first-generation Eeveelutions.

Second Generation

The second generation of Pokemon includes two new Eevee evolutions: Umbreon (dark-type) and Espeon (psychic-type). Like the first generation Eeveelutions, getting Eevee to evolve into Umbreon or Espeon can be done using the name trick.

  • Espeon (Sakura)
  • Umbreon (Tamao)

Also like the first generation, the name trick only works the first time players do it. However, there is an additional method to getting Umbreon and Espeon without using the name trick. Players will need to assign Eevee as their buddy Pokemon and then walk with it for 10km. After that, wait for it to be night time in the game and evolve it to turn it into Umbreon. Otherwise, evolve it during the day time and it will evolve into Espeon.

With these tips in mind, Pokemon GO players should have a better understanding of how Eevee's evolution works in the game, and how they can control it.

Pokemon GO is out now for iOS and Android mobile devices.
