Pokemon GO's annual Halloween event is live, and this year's is arguably the game's biggest yet. Not only are players able to enjoy double candy for all Pokemon, but they also have some new Gen 4 Pokemon to catch, Giratina to battle in legendary raids, and a surprise Special Research quest to complete as well.

The Special Research quest added as part of Pokemon GO's Halloween event is called A Spooky Message, and it's the first Special Research that involves a non-mythical Pokemon. This time around, players have to complete two pages of tasks to catch the ghost/dark-type Pokemon Spiritomb.

Here are all the tasks that are a part of the A Spooky Message Special Research quest, and the rewards players get for completing them.

Step 1

  • Catch 10 Ghost-type Pokemon
  • Make 8 Great Throws
  • Use 108 berries to help catch Pokemon

Some players may be wondering why they have to feed 108 berries to Pokemon as part of this step, and the reason has to do with the lore behind Spiritomb. Spiritomb's Pokedex number in the Sinnoh region is 108, and the creature was "formed by 108 spirits," according to its Pokedex entry.

Players shouldn't be intimidated by the high number of berries that they have to use, though. If Pokemon happen to jump out of Pokeballs, players can keep feeding them berries and get through this task much quicker. Pokemon that run away still count towards the total as well, so players don't have to stress about actually catching any of the Pokemon they're feeding.

Completing this step will unlock 10 Pokeballs, 1080 Stardust, and 8 Silver Pinap Berries.

Step 2

  • Catch 10 Dark-type Pokemon
  • Spin 8 PokeStops you haven't visited before
  • Catch 108 Pokemon

Now this step may be a bit trickier. Dark-type Pokemon are even rarer than ghost-type Pokemon, so players should really try their best to get through this Special Research quest while the Halloween event is going on. The spawn rate of dark-type Pokemon has been greatly increased during the event along with ghost-types, which could make that particular objective much easier to complete.

The hardest objective is going to be spinning eight PokeStops players haven't visited before. Past Field Research quests have asked players to visit PokeStops they haven't visited before, so regular players may have already had to travel to complete those objectives. Players will now have to travel even farther outside of their usual play area to complete the Spiritomb Special Research.

For dedicated Pokemon GO players, the trip out of town may be worth it. Completing the second step unlocks another set of 10 Pokeballs, 1080 Stardust, and 8 Silver Pinap Berries, plus it gives players the opportunity to catch Spiritomb (as the Catch 108 Pokemon encounter reward).

After catching Spiritomb, players will get 18 Spiritomb candy, 1080 Stardust, and 3,240 XP for their troubles.

Compared to the Celebi and Mew Special Research, completing all the steps for the Spiritomb Special Research should be much easier. However, this quest will become much harder to complete once the Halloween event is over, so Pokemon GO players should be sure to play as much as possible while the event is still live if they want to add Spiritomb to their collection with minimal hassle.

Pokemon GO is out now for iOS and Android mobile devices.
