Generation 1 of the Pokémon games didn't have the most intricate designs, but that was part of their appeal. Pokémon from the first generation (like other generations) can be based on animals or inanimate objects. There are even cases of Pokémon based on yōkai, supernatural monsters in Japanese folklore.
These designs resonate with players because of their originality. If it weren't for Generation 1's phenomenal designs, the franchise might not have been as explosively popular, and shows like Digimon may have won the fictional monster wars. Digimon had a more detailed story and darker tones, but ultimately, Pokémon's designs were groundbreaking. These are the ten Generation 1 Pokémon with the most creative designs.
10 Cubone
What's interesting about Cubone is the backstory behind its appearance. Cubone wears the skull of his dead mother as a helmet. We never actually see Cubone's face since it always wears the skull. Survival is tough for this small creature, yet it gets by using a bone as a weapon. With the bone, Cubone can use moves like Bone Club and Boomerang, which are exclusive to this fascinating Pokémon.
9 Squirtle
As one of the original starter Pokémon, Squirtle has a design that is based on a blue turtle. It can spray streams of water from its mouth with precise accuracy. Squirtle withdraws into its shell when it is sleeping.
Squirtle puts on sunglasses and adopts a new persona as he becomes a member of the Squirtle Squad. In the anime, Ash Ketchum's Squirtle is the leader of the gang. The Squirtle Squad is known for causing mischief and for hosting the Shop 'N Squirtle channel in the game Pokémon Channel.
8 Mewtwo
Mewtwo has two Mega Evolutions, but it's hard to beat the original design. In many ways, Mewtwo resembles the ancient Pokémon Mew, except for being taller and filled with hatred. This bipedal design is unique, earning points for creativity.
In the first generation of the Pokémon games, Mewtwo is found lurking deep within the Cerulean Cave. According to the Pokémon Red Pokédex entry, "It was created by a scientist after years of horrific gene splicing and DNA engineering experiments."
7 Tentacruel
This Water-type and Poison-type Pokémon has appeared in multiple episodes of Pokémon. According to Ash's Pokédex, "Tentacruel, a Jellyfish Pokémon. An evolved form of the Tentacool. Its numerous tentacles serve as a powerful weapon. It is known as 'The Gangster of the Sea.'"
It has a giant appearance, which is reminiscent of a squid. However, Tentacruel also shares characteristics of a jellyfish. It has also been suggested that it looks like an alien. It's head's red gems are like glowing eyes, which is likely a defense mechanism.
6 Eevee
Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee! prove that Generation I is still relevant all of these years later. One of the titular Pokémon of the two remakes is the adorable Normal-type Eevee. Because of its popularity, Eevee became more than a secondary Pokémon. It received a significant upgrade to its stats and moves in the seventh generation remakes. 5 Gengar
Gengar was one of the first Pokémon to appear in the franchise's history. Pokémon Blue and Red's intro begins as Gengar squares off against a Jigglypuff or Nidorino. Gengar's appearance is much like the silhouette of another Pokémon. It is a shadow, which is ingenuity on the part of Pokémon's creators. Frightening and powerful, this design profoundly speaks to Pokémon players.
4 Scyther
Generation 1 and Generation 1 remake players understand the frustration of trying to find this Pokémon. However, Scyther can be purchased at the Game Corner for a pretty penny if you want to spend Pokémon Dollars. It can also be found in areas of the Safari Zone, but there's a low chance that you'll encounter one and be able to catch it.
Scyther's design resembles a praying mantis. Its sharp claws make it a powerful foe, and an asset to any team. According to Pokémon Blue's Pokédex entry, "With ninja-like agility and speed, it can create the illusion that there is more than one."
3 Gyarados
In later games of the series, Gyarados can evolve into Mega Gyarados. Its appearance is reminiscent of a snake or a dragon. This serpentine Pokémon has sharp teeth, and oddly enough, it rarely closes its mouth. Few could've predicted that Magikarp would evolve into such a frightening water beast. You can find Gyarados in both fresh and salt waters. This is one of the most creative designs we've seen in Pokémon thus far.
2 Pikachu
Pikachu is based on the pika animal. The Pokémon company does a great job of choosing lesser-known animals to based their designs. This small rodent's appearance is similar to a mouse, except it is electrically charged. It's not the most complicated design, but it does score points for creativity.
Pikachu is the mascot of Pokémon. It's unlikely that even the Pokémon creators could've predicted the massive popularity of this creature. Pikachu eventually received a standalone film called Detective Pikachu.
1 Charizard
As the mascot of Pokémon Red and Fire Red, Charizard has an intimidating appearance. Its Japanese name translates to Lizardon, which reveals that a lizard inspired it. It may also take after a dragon or the mythical version of a salamander.
For being one of the rarest cards in the Pokémon Trading Card Game and for its artwork, Charizard is a worthy contender for the most creative Pokémon. This design has resonated with players worldwide and is an excellent addition to any trainer's lineup.
