Pokemon has been around for over 25 years now and comprises eight "generations" of Pokemon. This year will see the ninth generation of Pokemon begin with the release of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. Due to the series' longevity, even fans who were very young when they first started playing the games are now approaching or are in their 30s, and some have begun discussing what the most obscure Pokemon is throughout its history.

With over 900 individual Pokemon, it can be extremely difficult to remember them all. Each generation usually introduces at least 100 new creatures to the massive pool of Pokemon, so some fans will likely have forgotten that some Pokemon even exist, unless a fan lives and breathes nothing but this series. It is currently unknown how many Pokemon will be added to Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, but fans can probably expect the same amount as previous entries. The three starter Pokemon have already been revealed, and they, of course, will have their two evolutions for a total of at least nine new Pokemon.

In a Reddit post started by a user named LightBuzzyear69, they asked a simple question: "What do you think is actually the most obscure Pokemon?" Pokemon that had Mega evolutions from the latest generation, Legendaries, or Competitive Pokemon were ruled out by LightBuzzyear69 due to them being seen more. The post invited a wave of comments, with Pokemon fans chiming in on whom they thought was the least well-known Pokemon out there. LightBuzzyear69 thought it was perhaps the Pokemon Swanna from the fifth generation of Pokemon. A couple of people argued that Swanna was revived thanks to its appearance in Pokemon Masters EX as Skyla's sync pair Pokemon.

A number of other comments mentioned the middle evolution out of many Pokemon due to it being a transition stage to a Pokemon most Pokemon trainers would want. Other users also brought up the fact that a Pokemon could be more recognizable if it appeared in the Pokemon anime. A couple of Pokemon would be far less well-known if it wasn't for their appearance in the show.

However, it is obvious that almost every fan excluded Pokemon from the first two generations of Pokemon. These two generations were around at the start of Pokemon's explosive growth when the series first began, and so most fans have those Pokemon memorized as a part of their childhoods. Those Pokemon are also helped by the fact that the first series of the Pokemon anime was arguably the most popular one.

Of course, the problem with asking what Pokemon is the most obscure is that there is no clear answer. One Pokemon would have been bound to slip the minds of everyone in the thread, and there is always one Pokemon that might be remembered more than others. Still, it is a fun exercise in testing the memory of Pokemon fans today.
