Two Pokemon fans have achieved the monumental feat of completing what’s known as a Living Master Dex. In layman’s terms, that means that not only have they caught every single Pokemon, they now have them all nestled away in one location. These guys have taken the series’ motto “Gotta catch ‘em all” to its logical conclusion, and with an accomplishment like that, it’s understandable that they celebrated it in style.

Completing a Pokedex has always been a challenge that demands plenty of time and dedication, even back when there were only 150 Pokemon to catch. These days, after eight generations of Pokemon games, that number stands at a whopping 905, so it goes without saying that trying to “catch ‘em all” requires a far greater effort than ever before. That’s what makes Reddit user SpacebornKiller and his friend’s achievement so impressive.

Sharing news of their accomplishment on the Pokemon subreddit, as well as a photo of the two friends in fancy suits, SpacebornKiller explained that they began filling out their Living Dex back in 2018, with the objective of obtaining every Pokemon in the game that it’s first catchable in. They started by completing the Pokedexes for the first two generations of games, but the problem there is that those games don’t allow for transferring Pokemon to later titles, which the team needed to do to get their collection in one place and complete the “living dex” part of the Living Master Dex.

This forced the two friends to collect those Pokemon all over again in Pokemon LeafGreen/FireRed and Ruby/Sapphire/Crystal, along with spinoff titles Colosseum and XD: Gale of Darkness, according to SpacebornKiller. From there, they moved their collection to the next mainline titles before catching all of that generation’s Pokemon, moving on to the next, and repeating the process until they’d caught them all.

There are several factors that make filling out a Living Master Dex daunting beyond simply catching over 900 Pokemon. For Pokemon with one or more evolutions, those have to be acquired multiple times in order to attain each evolution, which can be grueling by itself given how difficult evolving some Pokemon can be. There’s also the fact that some Mythical Pokemon were only available as part of special events and can no longer be captured legitimately. For these, a friend was able to provide the team with some legit Mythical Pokemon, while they had to use Game Shark to access the events and catch the rest themselves.

Given the sheer amount of time and effort required to perform this monumental accomplishment, the Pokemon community has had nothing but praise for SpacebornKiller and their friend. At the same time, there’s a bittersweetness to the achievement, since their Living Master Dex will soon be made incomplete once Pokemon Scarlet and Violet introduce a whole new batch of Pokemon. On the bright side, though, now that they have a full Pokedex for Generations 1-8, completing the one for Gen 9 should be a snap.
