Since the inception of Pokemon, many of the creatures have had dual-typings. While there are a lot of single-type Pokemon, there were many who would feature two types, especially when fully evolved. This included some of the most popular pocket monsters, such as Charizard, who is a Fire/Flying type. Now, one fan has an idea on how to make having two types matter more.

Pokemon with dual-types had more strengths and weakness than those who had a single type. However, it never mattered much which type was the primary and which was the secondary. Pokemon would get the STAB attribute for both regardless.

One Redditor by the name Bulbamew has come up with an idea to make whether a typing is the primary or the secondary matter a lot more. They mention that many pocket monsters in the early generation Pokemon games were Rock/Ground-type, while Rhydon was Ground/Rock, and that there really was no point in there being a distinction since it did not make a difference in battle.

To help make which type was primary and which was secondary matter more, Bulbamew suggested that a Pokemon only get the STAB attribute for the primary. The example they used would be Rhydon receiving a stronger Earthquake, while Golem gains a more powerful Stone Edge. This would be important as the games continue to be made, as each entry in the franchise has introduced new forms for some Pokemon, as well as type changes mid-battle through some mechanics such as Mega Evolutions.

Bulbamew does state that this change should only affect offense and not defense, as that would make things too complicated. The only negative that they see with their proposed change would be Flying-type Pokemon. For many generations, Pokemon such as Pidgeot had Flying as their secondary typing. This would mean that there would have to be many retypings, though Bulbamew does not think that a lot of people would be opposed to that. As many fans want there to be innovations and changes in every new generation of Pokemon, some would probably be open to the change.

Many comment that they agree with the idea and also offer their own suggestions. One was that a Pokemon's primary type receive a 1.5x STAB boost, while the secondary receive a boost of 1.25x. There was also a suggestion that a Pokemon be introduced that could change which typing was the primary and the secondary in the middle of a battle, which could bring about interesting strategies. One commenter even stated that they would like to see this sort of system be introduced in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. It is a very interesting idea, and really would change how a lot of gamers build their teams, as they would have to take a Pokemon's type into consideration a lot more than they already do.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet will release in 2022 for Nintendo Switch.
