The unusual-looking Pokemon Tangela and Tangrowth are given a new look after a talented fan artist decides to provide them with new custom regional variants. Tangela and Tangrowth are a pair of Grass-type pocket monsters first seen in Gen 4 of the Pokemon series, and their appearances are hard not to notice due to their unique designs.

Staying true to their Grass typing, both Tangela and Tangrowth are made up primarily of blue vine-like growths. Tangela features a roughly spherical shape and a pair of reddish feet. On the other hand, Tangrowth, the evolution of Tangela, features a more refined design that includes long arms. While the looks of these Pokemon stand out, one gamer has taken these plant-like designs and given them a significant overhaul, imagining how they might look as aquatic-themed regional variants.

The custom regional variants for Tangela and Tangrowth were shown off in an image posted on Reddit by a user known as Haychel. This new artwork from the Reddit user replaced the blueish vines of the Pokemon with what appeared to be seaweed. The artist added longer leaves and additional details to the seaweed on Tangrowth to show that it was the evolution of Tangela. One of the minor details that went a long way into selling the overall look was the webbed feet of Tangela, helping to portray the new aquatic theme for the Pokemon.

In addition to showing off the new looks, the picture shared by Haychel revealed that the new regional designs for both Tangela and Tangrowth were known as Elysian Forms. In addition, there was text noting that these Pokemon were dual-type, as they now featured Water typing. Beyond this, the artist included a smaller picture of the original Tangela and Tangrowth, allowing fans to compare the designs.

These new regional variants of Tangela and Tangrowth have created quite the buzz among the Pokemon community on Reddit. One user said it was nice to see concept art for another Grass/Water-type line of Pokemon, as they claimed only one was present in the series: Lotad and its evolutions. In addition to fans complimenting this new Grass/Water-type for these Pokemon, Haychel revealed the story surrounding the variants. According to the creator, “Tangelas and Tangrowths that reside in coastal areas take the form of seaweed and kelp.”

With many fans hoping for another Grass/Water-type line in the future, it will be interesting to see if the upcoming Pokemon Scarlet and Violet could add a new line of Pokemon like this, as not every pocket monster has been revealed for those games. While players will have to wait and see if this happens, at least they can admire this impressive concept art created by Haychel of Tangela and Tangrowth in the meantime.
