Considering the fact that there are several hundred Pokemon that have been added to the franchise since its start in the 1990s, it's no surprise that the creators have had to start getting pretty unique with their designs. The first Pokemon that many people think of have pretty normal designs. Things like caterpillars, rats, and fire-breathing dragons. But, there are some Pokemon that are just a little weirder.

A lot of Pokemon designs are really cool and unique, but some of them are just too weird. While we love the creativity they put into their designs, we have to admit that they've gone a little too far with making some of these Pokemon way too strange. To see Pokemon designs that are just too weird, keep reading.

Updated on January 26, 2023, by Jeff Drake: Pokemon are strange. This label can be attached to so many Pokemon that it might have been easier to make a list of Pokemon that don't look weird in any way. It also seems like Pokemon get a little weirder in appearance with each new generation; though, the first game had plenty of bizarre Pokemon too. Many of the newer Pokemon are more abstract in appearance than those in previous generations. This update will add five additional entries to the list, these new entries will feature Pokemon from more recent games.

15 Farigiraf

Farigiraf in Pokemon Scarlet

Looking at the unevolved form of this Pokemon, Girafarig, one has to wonder if the Catdog cartoon served as its inspiration. That's because Girafarig seems like the front half of two animals were stuck together. The front half appears much like a giraffe, while the back end looks like a creature with a Chain Chomp (from the Mario games) as its head.

The evolved form, Farigiraf, is even weirder. The secondary head is now in the front and appears to be eating the giraffe's head. This apparently helps the Pokemon focus its Psychic powers better.

14 Tinkatink

The cute but weird Tinkatink Pokemon

This odd little bipedal Fairy-type is evidence that the developers might be running out of ideas. Tinkatink is a bipedal creature with pinkish skin, and arms that are much longer than its legs. These arms end in a hand with three stubby fingers that don't look like they would be able to grasp anything.

These Pokemon carry a hammer of their own making. This makes them resemble a baby holding a rattle. However, instead of being cute and adorable like a baby, the Tinkatink is pure nightmare fuel to many players. The blank stare from its pupilless eyes and the sad expression on its jack o' lantern-like face are a little more than unnerving.

13 Bellibolt

Bellibolt about to discharge an electrical blast

This (roughly) triangular-shaped Pokemon is one of the weirdest. Bellibolt looks like the larval stage for whatever Grimace is supposed to be. On this Pokemon's chest is a blister that acts as a dynamo. What appear to be large, innocent-looking, eyes are in fact organs designed to discharge electrical blasts.

Bellibolt has tiny vestigial arms without hands What use these appendages are is a mystery, as they don't look like they can even make contact with each other. There are no legs, yet it still has feet. Lastly, the smile frozen on Bellibolt's face is just plain creepy.

12 Eiscue

The penguin-like Eiscue in Pokemon

A lot of Pokemon wear masks. Cubone is a prime example of this behavior. Eiscue is one of these Pokemon and appears to be a penguin with a cube of ice for a head. The ice helmet is worn in an effort to keep its head cold. There are two forms of Eiscue, Ice Face and Noice Face, and both are equally strange.

Both forms have a single hair protruding from the top of the ice helmet. The Ice Face has a huge block of ice over its head - so big, that it looks like the Pokemon should be struggling to remain upright. The Noice Form has a tiny ice helmet that makes its head look too small for its body. Both forms have an expressionless visage etched into the ice helmet.

11 Stakataka

The large Stakataka Pokemon

Stakataka is made from many small Pokemon that resemble stone blocks. Each block has a single eye-like spot on one side. These blocks merge to form a tall rectangular structure standing on four long legs (also made of these living blocks). When this Pokemon is angered the blocks begin to glow red.

Basically, this Pokemon looks like a small stone structure on legs; except that each brick in the structure has an eye that stares at the world. Along the walls of this structure are openings, but these all have a single eye string out. Forget weird, this Pokemon is terrifying.

10 Comfey

Comfey in the arena in Pokemon Sword and Shield

Comfey is a Fairy-type Pokemon that was introduced in Generation 7. Generation VII is the home to the Alola region, a region in the Pokemon world that is basically a tropical island, similar to Hawaii. Because the Alola region is such a tropical region, it makes perfect sense for the Pokemon to be super colorful, bright, and unique. Although Comfey definitely fits in with the Alola region, this Pokemon is just too weird.

Comfey is basically a lei come to life. Comfey is made up of flowers that have been strung together and look exactly like a lei that people wear in Hawaii. Pretty fitting for the Alola region, right? Comfey is definitely unique and perfect for this region, but also super weird.

9 Pineco

The pinecone-like Pineco in Pokemon

Pineco is a Pokemon that was introduced in Generation 2 of the Pokemon franchise. True to its name, this Bug-type Pokemon basically looks like a pinecone with eyes. This Pokemon lives in forests and has no limbs or mouth, just a single spike at the top of its head. This Pokemon defends itself by spitting out a substance that becomes hard when it comes into contact with the air.

There are a lot of Pokemon that are designed to look like animals and even some that are designed to look like inanimate objects. Things like flowers, sandcastles, and even ice cream cones appear as Pokemon. There's no denying that a pinecone Pokemon is unique, but this Pokemon is one that takes the unique design idea way too far and is just a little weird.

8 Mimikyu

pokemon sun ultra sun moon ultra moon totem mimikyu

No, this isn't some kind of badly drawn Pikachu. This is an actual Pokemon that was introduced in Generation 7. Mimikyu is a dual-type Ghost/Fairy Pokemon that looks oddly familiar. This Pokemon wears a rag that has been doodled on to make it look like Pikachu, a Pokemon from the first generation of the Pokemon franchise. No one knows what exactly is going on underneath this rag.

Mimikyu wears this Pikachu disguise because of the popularity of that original Pokemon. It believes that disguising itself as Pikachu would make people love it. While that story is interesting, the fact that it looks like a weird version of Pikachu makes this Pokemon way too weird.

7 Mr. Mime

Mr. Mime in Pokémon: Let's Go

Mr. Mime is a Pokemon that was introduced in Generation 1 as a Psychic-type Pokemon. After Generation VI when the Fairy-type was introduced, this Pokemon became a dual-type Psychic/Fairy Pokemon. Mr. Mime is a humanoid Pokemon that walks on two legs, has blue growths that come out of the sides of its head like hair, and pink balls all over its body.

Mr. Mime is the focus of different myths and urban legends in the Pokemon fandom because of its super human-like appearance. It's hard to deny that there seems to be something weird about this Pokemon. While most Pokemon are animals, insects, and stuff like that, this one looking so much like a person is just weird.

6 Klefki

A wild Klefki in Pokemon

Some Pokemon look like animals, some like insects, and some look like people. Then, there are some Pokemon that don't fit any of those categories. Some of those are really cool and unique while others are strange. Klefki is a Pokemon that was introduced in Generation 6 and doesn't fit into any of the normal Pokemon categories. It's not an animal, an insect, or even a semi-humanoid Pokemon.

Klefki is a Pokemon that is shaped like a keyring with four different keys on it. Klefki is known to sneak into the homes of people that live near where it is and steal their keys, so it can keep them. No one really knows why Klefki does this and its strange behavior just makes the fact that this Pokemon is shaped like a keyring even weirder.

5 Alcremie

The sweet looking Alcremie in Pokemon

Alcremie is one of the brand-new Pokemon that is set to be released with Generation 8 of the Pokemon franchise with the release of Pokemon Sword and Shield. There hasn't been a lot revealed about the new Pokemon that have been announced, but the design of Alcremie already has Pokemon fans scratching their heads.

While food Pokemon are definitely not all that new to the Pokemon franchise, that doesn't mean that Alcremie isn't still pretty unusual. Alcremie is designed to look like a pile of whipped cream with two strawberries on either side of its head. This Pokemon may look delicious, but it's still super strange.

4 Vanilluxe

Pokemon Vanilluxe Friendship

Vanilluxe is the final form of Vanillite and was introduced in Generation 5. All of the Pokemon in Vanillite's evolutionary chain are super strange and Vanilluxe is no exception. Vanilluxe is a Pokemon that is designed to look like an ice cream cone with two scoops of ice cream sitting side by side.

This Ice-type Pokemon can create snow and ice out of the huge amounts of water that it ingests, making it really popular with Pokemon Trainers that are looking to cool down. This Pokemon is made of two Vanillish that were melted and frozen back together. This Pokemon is unique but weird.

3 Unown

pokemon legends arceus unown

Unown is a Psychic-type Pokemon that was introduced in Generation 2 of the Pokemon franchise. Unown isn't a Pokemon that evolves into or up from any other Pokemon in the franchise, but that doesn't mean that every Unown is the same. There are several different shapes that this Pokemon can appear as. These shapes are designed to look like all the different letters of the Latin alphabet, plus a few marks of punctuation.

Related: Pokemon Based On Real Plants

We have to admit that a unique Pokemon that is designed to look like letters and punctuation is unique and totally different from anything else in the Pokemon franchise, it's definitely a little strange. Paired with the weird behavior that this rare Pokemon is known for exhibiting, it all makes for a really strange Pokemon design.

2 Exeggcute

Encountering Exeggcute in Pokemon Go

Exeggcute is a Pokemon that was introduced in Generation 1 of the Pokemon franchise. Exeggcute is a dual-type Grass/Psychic Pokemon and the first Pokemon in the evolutionary chain of Exeggutor. Exeggcute is designed to look like a group of five or six different eggs, each with its own face. Some of the eggs are cracked and one of them even has a large hole in the top of its head.

Despite the fact that this Pokemon looks like a group of eggs, the fact that it evolves up into Exeggutor shows that this Pokemon is definitely closer to a group of seeds than eggs. This group of Pokemon is definitely different from others in the franchise, but a Pokemon that looks like a bunch of cracked eggs laying on the ground is pretty weird.

1 Jynx

Jynx In Pokemon Sword & Shield

Jynx is a dual-type Ice/Psychic Pokemon that was introduced in the first generation of the Pokemon franchise. Although many people think of the later generations of Pokemon when they think of strange Pokemon designs, Jynx is definitely one of the weirder ones from Generation I.

Jynx is a humanoid Pokemon that has long, blonde hair, and two arms, and makes noises that almost sound like a human speaking, but no one can decipher what it is saying. This Pokemon wears a long, red dress and is not shown to have feet underneath it. Jynx was designed to look like Yamauba and Yuki-onna, figures from Japanese mythology.
