Impressive visuals from a gaming handheld are no big shock these days, with the Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck offering full-fledged gaming experiences on portable units. There's no debate that handheld gaming has come a very long way since the original Nintendo Game Boy.

With a black and white display and comparatively tinny audio, the Game Boy is far beyond its prime. However, that doesn't mean that the love for the device has worn away, as many celebrate the Game Boy as a loved handheld that brought players to new worlds, like the Kanto region of Pokemon.

One such fan is taking the opportunity to show off their fondness for their handheld Game Boy and the Pokemon games it brought to the world. User Takezoretoro took to Reddit to share an image of their custom Haunter Game Boy, impressing fellow fans. The Game Boy features a custom shell, with a purple transparent base color that acts as a perfect canvas for custom Haunter art. The Ghost-type Pokemon looks like it's bursting out of the front of the handheld, right next to the Pokemon logo and a Pokeball.

The custom is remarkable to look at, and is likely something many Pokemon fans would love to have for themselves, especially since this particular Ghost Pokemon evolutionary line is so popular. While the user didn't specify in the post if they're selling this particular custom, this type of shell replacement has become popular among Game Boy fans. The customization process tends to maintain the internal components while providing a unique flair on the outside, though some also opt to upgrade their Game Boy devices with options like a larger screen or rechargeable battery.

Pokemon and Nintendo have come a very long way since the origins of the series in the late 1990s. Players can now easily explore the Pokemon world wherever they go, with options on all of the Nintendo handhelds over the years, plus Pokemon GO being available on most mobile devices. Even so, the original Game Boy continues to charm many who grew up with it, as well as retro enthusiasts.

Long-time Pokemon fans won't have to wait for very long to get another Pokemon fix. Despite delays on other big Nintendo projects, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are still set to release in 2022 for the Nintendo Switch. With only one teaser being shown so far, it's currently unknown if Gastly, Haunter, and Gengar will be appearing in the next Pokemon, but as long-standing favorites, fans will surely be looking for them.
