Pokemon has announced a new stop-motion animated series for Netflix titled Pokemon Concierge. This project is a stop-motion animated series about Pokemon going on vacation.
Last year, the Pokemon anime announced that it would conclude the story of Ash and Pikachu, sending the duo out as world champions. While an anime for generation 9 is also in the works, an entirely new series has been announced for Netflix. This series looks focused more on the Pokemon and less on the trainers.
Celebrating the anniversary of their original game release in 1996, also known as “Pokemon Day,” the Pokemon Company made several announcements on February 27, 2023, regarding their upcoming projects, including Pokemon Concierge. The series will be about Pokemon going on vacation and appears to take place at a beach resort that caters exclusively to Pokemon. It will be produced by the French animation company Dwarf Studio. Dwarf Studio produced several recent stop-motion animated series, such as Disney's Monsters at Work and Netflix's My Dad the Bounty Hunter.
Along with the announcement, a Pokemon Concierge teaser trailer was released. This small clip features a stop-motion animated Psyduck on the beach and little else. However, the photo accompanying the article features a human trainer alongside the Psyduck. Based on what was shown in the trailer, fans might speculate that the series will feature a different Pokemon each week or that Psyduck could even be the main character.
With the departure of Ash and Pikachu in the anime, expanding the Pokemon universe is a wise move. Even with the Scarlet and Violet anime in the distant future, the main characters will be brand new and won't hold the same nostalgia value. While the anime has already begun to expand with series such as Pokemon Origins and Pokemon Generations, those still featured characters that fans were familiar with. When introducing brand-new characters, it is probably best to play the numbers game.
