Last summer, the auction website Huggins & Scott Auctions put up an unopened box of Pokemon cards from 1999 that sold for a whopping $56,000. Now Huggins & Scott is auctioning off yet another unopened box of Limited Printing Base Set Pokemon booster cards from 1999, with the first bid at an impressive $35,000.

This box set comes with 36 booster card packs, each with 11 cards. According to the auction site, the odds of fans getting a foil card out of one of the packs is about 1:3, meaning they could potentially get some especially rare and valuable cards out of the deal. However, it seems unlikely that someone would pay so much money for Pokemon cards and then decide to open them, as that would greatly decrease the product's overall value.

Then again, there are some individual Pokemon cards that are worth quite a bit. Take the Pokemon Illustrator card, for example. It can't be won from booster packs and was only sent to 39 people as part of a promotion, but it is estimated to be worth about $50,000 by itself. Holographic Charizard cards, meanwhile, are routinely available online for thousands of dollars as well.

Of course, the Pokemon trading card game has evolved quite a bit since its beginnings in the 90s, and anyone hoping to collect them all would be looking at buying thousands of cards. New rules have also been introduced, like the especially powerful GX Pokemon and the brand new tag team concept that puts two Pokemon together on a single card.

The way fans actually play the Pokemon trading card game has also evolved. While they're still welcome to face off against each other in person and tournaments are regularly held at game shops, libraries, and other events throughout the world, many others elect to play the digital version instead. Better yet, players can add the cards they buy in real life to their digital collection.

The high-priced, unopened box of Pokemon cards from 1999 won't have the QR codes necessary to do that, but it would still be something that a serious collector would seek out. It will be interesting to see just how many people place a bid on the box, and how high its final price will be.
