One of the things that makes Game Freak's Pokemon series so enjoyable is the emphasis that the games place on Pokemon types. Rather than simply throwing out their strongest Pokemon at the beginning of each battle, players are encouraged to choose their active Pokemon based on the strengths and weaknesses of their opponents', and, over the course of the games, must build a team with strong type coverage so as to be prepared for any possible outcome. Just as it was in the original games, this is once again the case in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl.

There are 18 different Pokemon types in Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. Given how many there are, however, it can sometimes be difficult to remember all of the relevant information and so can be useful to have a guide explaining the effectiveness of each type at the ready just in case. To make matters worse, some Pokemon — like the final stage evolutions of the games' three starter Pokemon — have two different types, meaning players will need to consider the strengths and weaknesses of each when planning their next move.
