Grass-types have a bit of a negative reputation in the Pokemon games: they tend to be fragile, and have more weaknesses than either of the other starter types. Thus, Grass-type starters like Turtwig tend to be overlooked. However, in Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl, it's worth giving this Grass-type starter a chance. Its fully-evolved form, Torterra, can become an immovable object in the right hands.

Of course, when training up this behemoth, it helps to give it a handy item to hold. Throughout Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, players can give their Pokemon items to hold that can restore their health, passively increase their attack power, and more. As players set out on their journey, here are the best items for the World Turtle Pokemon.

8 Wise Glasses

Some of Torterra's best Grass-type moves, like Giga Drain and Leaf Storm, are Special moves; however, Torterra's Special Attack is fairly mediocre compared to its Attack. The Wise Glasses can help make up for this, as they increase the power of Special moves by 10%. It's not as significant of a boost as items that power up specific move types, but applies to a broader range.

What's more, the Wise Glasses are easy to find. Simply head to the house in Celestic Town that serves as the town's shop, and speak to the man wearing glasses who resembles the NPC found at the entrance of each gym. He'll give a spiel about the power of glasses, and hand the player this item.

7 Miracle Seed

Torterra doesn't gain its secondary typing until its final evolution; thus, most of the STAB moves that it learns up to that point are Grass-type attacks. To help give this underrated type some extra power, hand Torterra a Miracle Seed, which boosts the power of Grass-type attacks by 50%.

To obtain the Miracle Seed, head to Floaroma Meadow by using Surf outside of the Valley Windworks, and heading towards the Fuego Ironworks. Enter Floaroma Meadow from the north, and find a Miracle Seed in the northwestern corner of the area. Alternatively, a wild Cherubi or Cherrim has a 5% chance to be holding this item when caught.

6 Big Root

Some of Torterra's best attacks are those that drain the enemy's HP. Mega Drain (and later, its more powerful form Giga Drain) can deal decent damage to opponents, especially those weak to Grass-type moves. Meanwhile, Leech Seed is perfect for chipping away at an opponent's health while slowly healing the user.

If Torterra is holding a Big Root, using these moves will restore 30% more HP than usual. Considering Torterra has the most HP of the Sinnoh starters, this item can prove invaluable in replenishing its health pool, and can make it nigh impossible to take down. To get a Big Root, pick one up on Route 214 between Veilstone City and Valor Lakefront.

5 Quick Claw

Torterra is the hardiest among the fully-evolved Sinnoh starters, with the highest HP stat and the highest combined defensive stats. However, this comes at the cost of being the slowest among them, with a base speed stat of only 56. The Quick Claw can help counteract this, as it gives the holder a 20% chance of automatically moving first.

Players can pick up a Quick Claw by speaking to an NPC in the Jubilife Condominiums in Jubilife City. It also has a 5% chance to be held by a wild Sneasel, Weavile, Meowth, Persian, or Zangoose.

4 Soft Sand

For a Ground-type Pokemon, Torterra doesn't actually learn that many Ground-type moves — only Earthquake and Bulldoze. However, Torterra users will likely find themselves using these attacks a lot, as Ground-type moves are super effective against several different types. So when it comes to these attacks, it's important to make them count.

That's where the Soft Sand comes in, as it boosts the power of the holder's Ground-type moves by 20%. Players can find this item in Mount Coronet, on the first basement floor. It's the only one in the game, so it's advised that players do not sell it.

3 Expert Belt

Ground-type attacks are among the most versatile in the Pokemon games, dealing super effective damage against Electric, Fire, Poison, Rock, and Steel types. This makes Torterra's Bulldoze and Earthquake invaluable in the gym battles against Byron and Volkner. What's more, its Grass-type moves are a godsend when faced with the common Water-type. Considering the wide range of super effective damage Torterra can deal, the Expert Belt is a perfect fit. When holding this item, a Pokemon's super effective moves will deal 20% more damage, making them even more devastating.

Players can get the Expert Belt from an old man in a house on Route 221. Each day, he will call out a number between 1 and 100. If shown a Pokemon of that level, he will reward the player with an item. The second time the player fulfills his request, they will receive an Expert Belt.

2 Choice Scarf

Like the Quick Claw, the Choice Scarf offers Torterra a solution to its low speed. This one is a bit more reliable than the Quick Claw's 20% chance to proc, but it comes with a trade-off. When holding the Choice Scarf, Torterra's Speed will be boosted by 50%. However, once it uses a move in battle, it is locked into using that move only until it faints or is switched out.

The Choice Scarf is only available in the postgame; it can be purchased at the Battle Tower for 25 BP. In order to unlock the battle tower, the player must become Champion by defeating the Elite Four and Cynthia. Though this item isn't available until late in the game, it can be very useful when competing at the Battle Tower or fighting rematches against Sinnoh's gym leaders.

1 Yache Berry

As a Grass/Ground type, one of Torterra's greatest disadvantages in battle is its 4x weakness to Ice-type attacks. Fortunately, the Yache Berry will halve the damage of any Ice-type attack that hits the Pokemon holding it. Though still powerful, this Berry can allow Torterra to tank a hit that would otherwise take it out.

The Yache Berry can be a little tricky to track down, but not impossible. Players have a chance to receive one from the Berry Woman in Pastoria City, who will hand out one damage-reducing Berry every day. Additionally, there's a small chance that a follower Pokemon may pick one up. Once found, it's recommended that the player plant their Yache Berry in soil, allowing them to farm berries and build up a large supply.
