Those who want to catch 'em all in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl will need to get their hands on the Super Rod, the best fishing item available in both remakes. In fact, it's the best fishing rod available in most other Pokemon games as well.

While the Old Rod and Good Rod are decent for catching Pokemon while traveling throughout the Sinnoh region in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, the Super Rod is required to catch rare water-types at the end of the game.

Updated on March 14, 2022 by Renri Seong: The Super Rod is the last Fishing Rod key item that players will get in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Pokemon Shining Pearl. The Pokemon that can be hooked by the Super Rod are at much higher levels than those that can be caught using the Old and Good Rod. Because of this, the Super Rod in BDSP is unobtainable until late-game. However, trainers intent on completing the Pokedex will want to pick up the Super Rod if they want to truly catch them all. The following guide has been updated to include a list of Super Rod-exclusive Pokemon, and which of these Pokemon trainers should add to their team.

Where to Find the Super Rod in Pokemon Diamond and Shining Pearl

To find the Super Rod in Pokemon Diamond and Shining Pearl, players must first beat the Elite Four and acquire the National Dex from Professor Oak after seeing all 151 Pokemon in the game. This will open up the ability to find and catch over 300 additional Pokemon not native to the Sinnoh Region, creating a massive goal to work toward for endgame content.

Once the National Dex has been received from Professor Oak in Sandgem Town, players should then head to Snowpoint City at the northernmost point of the map. Talk to the sailor by the boat, and travel to the Battle Zone. This will take players to the Super Rod location in the Fight Area in the northeastern corner of the map.

Head immediately north after getting off the boat and talk to the fisherman standing outside of the doorway to Route 225. If players have defeated the final four and have the National Dex, the fisherman in the Fight Area will then give players the Super Rod when they answer "Yes" to his question.

The Good Rod in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl is a decent item to use for fishing up Sinnoh water-types, but once the Super Rod has been obtained, rarer encounters like Gyrados and Feebas can be obtained easier.

To fish with the Super Rod, Good Rod, or Old Rod in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, go to any body of water and use the item while facing the water. When an exclamation point appears over the trainer's head, press A to reel the Pokemon in and start an encounter.

If shiny-hunting, or searching for a specific catch, players can always run from a battle instead of fighting to speed the process along. It's also recommended to change to a different tile if searching for a specific Pokemon, as sticking to the same spot will often result in repeat encounters.

Super Rod Exclusive Pokemon

Since players should have the National Dex by the postgame, there are no limits to Pokemon when fishing with the Super Rod. Additionally, the Battle Tower opens up several new routes that players can explore. Some Water-type Pokemon such as Sharpedo can only be found on specific routes in all of Sinnoh. However, thanks to the addition of the Grand Underground, Pokemon like Clamperl can be found as a Roaming Pokemon in certain hideaways. If players want the Pokemon to be below level 60, then they should use the Super Rod.

Which Pokemon to Catch with the Super Rod

pokemon brilliant diamond shining pearl dratini

Pokemon such as Whiscash and Dratini can be found in the Grand Underground despite being Water-type Pokemon. Then there are Pokemon like Feebas that can be caught with an Old or Good Rod.

Most of the Super Rod-exclusive Pokemon are worth catching, but the two that stand out are Dratini and Feebas. Dratini can evolve into the pseudo-legendary Dragonite, a Dragon/Flying-type Pokemon with a high base stat total. Feebas is recommended because of its evolution, Milotic. While not a pseudo-legendary, Milotic has superior Special Defense and Special Attack, making it very tanky and useful in competitive battling.

Players in a rush to evolve their Dratini can catch a level 60 Dratini in the Fountainspring Cave hideaway. Unfortuantely for Feebas, players will need to catch this Pokemon by fishing on B1F of Mt. Coronet.

Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are out now for Nintendo Switch.
