The first time Friendship was used in a Pokemon game was in Pokemon Yellow. Since the second generation, there were several Pokemon that could evolve by raising the Friendship level between trainer and Pokemon. This number has expanded and with it, new ways of increasing and decreasing Friendship have been added to the Pokemon games.

In Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, fan-favorite Pokemon such as Lucario can't be caught in the wild. However, players can get specific Pokemon through Friendship Evolution. Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl include four generations of Pokemon, meaning there are plenty of Pokemon that need Friendship to get to their next stage of evolution.

Updated December 27th, 2021 by Russ Boswell: There are actually quite a few friendship evolutions in BDSP. Those that are looking to have a team of Pokemon that feed off friendship and bonding will definitely want to consider the many friendship evolutions in this article. To better outline all of the choices in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, the following guide has been updated. The updated version now includes all the base statistics for the BDSP friendship evolutions, including both the base form and its evolution. These updates can better inform players that are looking for a particular stat-type to round out their team.

Pokemon with Friendship Evolution

Pokemon Brilliant Diamond Shining Pearl Friendship

Not every Pokemon will be available at the start of Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. To get access to every Pokemon from generation 1-4, players will need the National Dex. It's also not a bad idea to speak to NPCs, since some are more than willing to hand out Pokemon that can evolve via Friendship.

Evolving Pokemon with Friendship means the Pokemon has to have a Friendship of 220 (since generation 8) and then leveled up once to initiate evolution. However, sometimes it's not enough to level up a Pokemon with high friendship. A few species of Friendship-Evolution Pokemon won't evolve unless they're leveled up during the day or night.

Below are the Pokemon that evolve through Friendship in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.

Friendship Tips

affection rate battle benefits overpowered optional

Each Pokemon has a base friendship, so some will take longer than others to evolve. For example, Buneary has a Base Friendship of 0 while Budew has a Base Friendship of 50 (generation 8).

The best way to level up Friendship is by battling with Pokemon and keeping them from fainting in battle. The higher a Pokemon's Friendship is, the more its Friendship will decrease if it faints in battle or is fed a medicinal herb. To increase Friendship, take Pokemon on walks in Amity Square or give them massages. Giving a Pokemon the Soothe Bell to hold will also increase its friendship a little as it travels with its trainer.

Finally, players can use the Poketch Friendship App to check their Pokemon's friendship. Two "full hearts" above a Pokemon's head will indicate that it is at max friendship. Or, if they want a more specific rating, they can speak to an NPC at the Pokemon Fanclub in Hearthome City.
