The recent remakes of Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Pokemon Shining Pearl feature some online content that players can access with friends. There are several ways to connect with others, and players can interact and trade their Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl exclusives to others.

What are Groups Used for In Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl?

Groups are used mostly for local online play between players on the same network. Inside of groups, players can battle, trade, and even compare stats and Pokemon. In order to create or join a group, players just need to have a chat with the unnamed NPC just north of the fountain in front of Jubilife TV. This NPC will allow players to create a new group, delete or leave a current group, or join a group with any player that they have Mixed Records with.

Mixing Records and then getting into a group with other players syncs certain events in the games with everyone else in the group. These events are:

  • Pokemon popping up in Great Marsh
  • Battle Tower trainers
  • Swarm Pokemon routes
  • Feebas tiles in Mt. Coronet
  • The players that show up on TVs

How to Mix Records

Mixing Records takes place inside of Local Union Rooms. Five players can mix records which shares data between their Switches. This data includes the number of Pokemon each player has defeated, the number of Pokemon caught, the number of Pokemon Eggs, and the number of Pokemon encountered while fishing. Players can then look at each others stats and compare with those in their group. If players wish to connect to Global players instead of those on a local server, the steps are a little different.

The Union Room in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl

In the original versions of both Diamond and Pearl, players could connect with other players through the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection and Global Trade Station. Both the Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl remakes are different from the originals in that they replace the old connections with something called the Union Room. This room is located upstairs in every Pokemon Center in the games; players can access the Union Room by speaking to the nurse in the center. After getting the first gym badge in Oreburgh City, players can then also visit the basement of Pokemon Centers; once they have visited the basement once, then Union Room can be accessed from just about anywhere in the game by pressing Y.

Once inside of the Union Room, players can connect with players over a local network in the Local Room or use an internet connection in the Global Room to connect to anyone also playing the game. Players are required to have Nintendo Online subscriptions in order to connect to other players in the Global Room.

Creating a Global Group in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl

Players can also connect online to other players in the Grand Underground by creating a group connection. After making sure everyone that wants to play together is in the same city in the game, click on the option in the menu to connect to others over the internet. The Nintendo Switch will ask for a code; one player just needs to make up a code and share it with their friends. Everyone else can use this code to connect together. This will allow groups of online players to scour the Grand Underground for Pokemon together. If it is still not working, players need to make sure all of their NATs are type B.
