After years of waiting, Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Pokemon Shining Pearl have finally arrived. The two titles are the latest in Nintendo's campaign to remake the entire Pokemon series for the Nintendo Switch and are adaptations of the original Pokemon Diamond and Pokemon Pearl.

Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl remain faithful to their predecessors, while also adding some quality-of-life improvements. One of the classic Pokemon systems to return is the unusual method of evolving Rock/Ground-type Onix into Steel/Ground-type Steelix. Unlike most Pokemon, this evolution won't occur naturally and requires players to acquire a special item called a Metal Coat.

There are a few different ways to acquire the Metal Coat item in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, though none of them are easy. The first requires players to have the National Pokedex, which can only be acquired after they've seen every Sinnoh region Pokemon and completed the Pokemon League. After this, players will be given the Metal Coat by Byron if they speak to him in Riley's House on Iron Island.

Another method for getting a Metal Coat is to recover the item from a Steel-type Pokemon holding it. Bronzor, Magnemite, and Beldum all have a chance of holding a Metal Coat by default, and all three can be found in the Grand Underground region. Players can take the Metal Coat either by using the Thief move or by capturing the Pokemon and taking the item in the menu.

How to Evolve Onix in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl

Finding a Metal Coat is only the first step in evolving an Onix in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. In order to trigger the evolution, the Onix must be traded to another player while it is holding the Metal Coat. To initiate a trade, players will need to enter one of Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl's Local or Global Rooms, which can be found up or down the escalators in every Pokecenter.

Trading in this method means that the player who sends the Onix won't be the one to see it evolve, or get to keep the Steelix. However, many players get around this by agreeing to swap their Onix with friends, each holding a Metal Coat. Alternatively, there is also a Pokemon Link Code system available online to make sure players get in a room that offers the trade they're looking for. No matter which method is used, once Onix has been traded holding the Metal Coat it will automatically evolve when the trade ends.
